Thank you Mr David Bullard!I disagree, the goose came first. There was nothing here.
Thank you Mr David Bullard!
VAT is just a tax on the poor.
Rather increase the fuel levy. The price decreased more than R3.00 a litre, so put it up R1,00 a litre. We still all benefit from lower fuel prices and get to keep our salaries and 14% VAT rate.
And it forces unlicenced or uninsured drivers to pay more. Even better, it forces taxi's to pay more tax.
Increases in capital gains and dividend tax could see wealth flight. Not what we need right now. Squeezing the current population is easier.VAT is too much of a political hot potato. I don’t think it will change soon.
Expect more tax on Capital Gains.

That said, our capital gains and dividend tax is also "lagging" behind other countries - but you won't see the media clamouring for it.
Greater wealth flight has already taken place in the 90s&early noughts. Won't happen again no matter how tought things get - power crisis, water crisis, political crisis etc. Even the Richard branson are buying land here during these "tough times". Even Mining shares are stil doing rather ok despite the the various strikes.Increases in capital gains and dividend tax could see wealth flight. Not what we need right now.
Exactly.if capital was going to fly, it would have flew already as a result of the power issues, general uncertainty, political issues and world events, a change in the tax rate won't have that big an effect
I wonder what the breaking point will finally be when everybody says that enough is enough. I actually hope they go through with this just so that we can get closer to it...
They wouldn't have been necessary if Bantu education wasn't emoployed to render us academically &entrepreneurially malnourished.Social grants don't come cheap.
It would but then again maybe it will teach them a lesson to not buy at maximum affordability.
Money is not my area of expertise but interest rate hike of 1% would be more devastating?
So if we're going to follow international trends, they should be raising VAT and lowering income tax. I'm down with that...

It's only been 20 years, but at least the youngsters are getting a bit of an education and giving themselves a better chance.
Look at the EFF. All led by young academics (masters, docotrates, soon to be professorials who'll be shaping a lot of the young South African minds when they are not spending time in parliament) who put the ANC&DA to shame each time when they open their mouths. Their political strategies are unparalleled. Love them or hate them, what you're witnessing are the products of education whch their parents & grandparents were denied. Just think what the clever Blacks within the ANC would achieve too if they were not muzzled.
Bantu education denied us that, but our kids 30% plus F in Woodwork etc or not are getting it right. Grants won't be needed that much as some of the young ones are growing ashamed to be known as people who live off grants. So even that dependency mentality is getting eroded gradually by social dynamics. How many do you think will want to be known as RDP beneficiaries?
All are driven to learn, get a driver' license, get a job, buy a car, house/townhouse, go on fancy holidays, cruises travelling the globe etc. Who cares if Affirmative Action helps them out along the way - every race benefitted from it throughout history. Fact is they are progressing through their own enterprise.

You know the excuse... South Africa is always special when it suits them except when it doesn't suit them.WTF are these new by-words being used "International Trends" ?
What has S.A.'s VAT got to do with "international trends" anyway ? Other than an excuse to raise it.
If one goes by that thought process then, can we hope for a less corrupt government more in line with "international trends" ?
The cow has been dry for years.Instead of building better pastures to get the cows producing more milk they want to turn up the suction and suck more out the cow, how long until it goes dry!
It's been over half a generation already and they have nothing to show for this new education of them. They wouldn't have been necessary if Bantu education wasn't emoployed to render us academically &entrepreneurially malnourished.

I'm all for this. Our reserve bank is incompetent in rewarding debtors but punishing savers.I'm for pushing interest rates up. In the current system SAVERS are screwed over. Buy a smaller house, a smaller engined BMW or a Toyota instead of a 3 liter BMW and so on.
