VC 3G on MTN firmware?

I sent in a request to have my sim card 3G activated which was a couple of hours ago. When i connect tho via the MTN dashboard it only picks up GPRS and im certain there are 3G coverage very near to me.

Is this lack of 3G connection possibly linked to the MTN firmware? How long does it take to have a SIM 3G activated?

"3G coverage very near to me" That doesn't mean u have 3G. Yur just close to a area that actually has 3G coverage.lol

If the MTN simcard is in, it'll connect to a MTN tower that has GPRS or 3G
, if u got VC simcard it'll use VC towers.

I know, but have an antennae which should sort the coverage problem. Just doesnt want to connect because have same issue with MTN, no coverage by me according to them but with antennae i get it.

Huawei E620. Even if i truly dont get 3G i will be very surprised tho that i dont get EDGE. Maybe it was a bad thing to cancel my MTN bundle b4 checking the VC network. oops

Ok, I don't know the MTN dashboard s/w at all, so there could be a setting that you need to change to lock onto the Vodacom network - or maybe not - I just don't know, having said that, best to first check Vodacom's 3G coverage map to make sure that your exact location is actually covered - note that the map errs on the side of caution as v3g often says - many forumites have noted that the map says they are not within coverage when they do get coverage - the map is merely a guideline an not an absolute indication of coverage.

Well if you can stomach a large download, or if you have time to get a CD from a Vodashop, you could try downloading the Vodafone Mobile Connect dashboard [version 9 is required for Vista], but I don't think that is going to solve your problem - see the next part of my reply.

While you might occasionally get a 3G signal on either of the MTN or Vodacom networks, it is possibly only by fleeting chance - I could be wrong, but the fact that both the MTN and Vodacom 3G coverage maps indicate that you're in a dead spot, suggests that perhaps the residents in your area have opposed requests from both Vodacom and MTN to put up base-stations.

Best to email [email protected] - give them your exact physical address, and specifically ask about future plans to provide coverage in your area, do the same via the appropriate MTN channel.

What might help, but is not guaranteed, is to get yourself a fixed external antenna - hint: the current sponsor of this forum specialises in these antennas.

Well i would just like to inform you that i did a test of my own. Went to a friends house (in lakeside) so decided to keep my notebook running the whole way. Not once did i pick up 3G and/or EDGE. I definitely know i passed through a couple of areas but even if i didnt, find it strange how MTN's coverage then is better than VC's because on the trip back checked with MTN sim.

Can maybe someone from the technical guys find out if my mtn card might be the problem (i.e the firmware or the software) or is there a place i can take my card for proper testing to see if it actually does pick up 3G on the VC network?

Urgency would be really great as this MTN R2.MB is really killing me.

Check your APN - it should be Internet. On the MTN dashboard, go to settings (two gears, bottom right), check that network is on auto, and on connection tab, check the APN (internet). I have used my F@astlnk card with Vodacom SIM - no problem at all. I have created profiles for the different networks, but that should not be necessary if you only switch once.
