Has anyone switched from ADSL to VDSL recently? Telkom told me they have switched it over and it will take 24 hours and speed will decrease on my line in the meantime. It sounds a bit weird, I thought it would just be a switch there and then like Biometrics said on another thread.

But anyway, I signed up for 20Mbps VDSL and got my new router set up yesterday with log in details etc. Line was 4Mbps ADSL and it showed that my line was now 20Mbps and a Speedtest conformed this.

So I called Telkom to activate VDSL on my line yesterday lunchtime and the guy who seemed very knowledgeable said he’s switched it over and it’ll take 24 hours.

So now my line speed has dropped to 15Mbps (he said it would get slower) and my status page looks like this just now.

Has anyone else had to wait this long or am I being stupid and the guy is winding me up?

Should say, screenshot is from my phone and it's shrunk the columns a bit. Second column is 'Status' which for VDSL says down. 'LB' column shows active through which I'm assuming means the profile is good.

The mode on the dslam will change and then you need to change the mode on the modem so it connects on vdsl.

VDSL is usually instant, I upgraded a line about a year ago and after I phoned them they asked me to reboot the modem after 5mins, thereafter I was sync'ing at 40Mbps.

By the looks of it they switched you to 20Mbps ADSL and not 20Mbps VDSL, both exists and works fine but Telkom usually gets confused between the two, they definitely didn't switch you to the VDSL profile.... Phone them again and ask them to do it correctly this time.

BTW, seems like Telkom increased the VDSL speeds? Always got 40Mbps but now it's showing 45Mbps? WOW great stuff

Forgive the noob questions, but when the mode changes should the VDSL status then show as 'up'? Not sure how I would change the mode on the modem either? I had thought that when the status showed 'up', I would deactivate the ADSL profile and then it would connect to VDSL?

Yeah, things didn't seem right but I felt obliged to wait 24 hours like he said. Also he talked a lot about the line speed dropping in the meantime and the ADSL line speed showed a drop from 20Mbps to 15Mbps.

I just spoke to Telkom, lady said status was ‘migrating’ so it should be changed in next couple of hours.

I remain to be convinced by will give till lunchtime and see if anything has changed.

You don't need to change anything in the router other than restarting it.

15Mbps is the temporary sync profile, mine went to 15Mbps before it went to full VDSL, granted it didn't take 24 hours but it did happen.

I have the same one and I didn't have to.
I'm pretty sure I had to input my account details on the VDSL WAN interface when they finally threw the ADSL/VDSL switch.

Yup I had to enter a vlan number on my VDSL port with the pppoe settings. Had to Google it as the ISP didn't provide me with that info. Getting 40/10mbps

I've restarted a few times including just now and no change to the screen shot above.

Good to know. Thanks.

I have entered the username and password etc in the VDSL profile and by googling and sniffing about, I think the other settings are fine.

Yeah, you mean 802.1p should be set to 0 and 802.1q should be 835?

Yes, it was not obvious when all the ISP sent was a username/password for the PPPoe, thinking ADSL was very similar to VDSL I did not know there was any other settings. Took some googling :)

I had the same problem (where telkom was unable or unwilling to switch to vdsl) so I upgraded to 40mb vdsl thinking I would downgrade to 20 afterwards but I remained on 40mb.

I ended up having to call the technical department and they forced the migration. ADSL stopped working, VDSL started working. I needed the upload speeds at the time so forcing the issue was worth the effort.

I also had to call the technical department, guy did the switch while I was on the phone and asked me to reset the router. Then it switched to VDSL.

Jibbers, totally clueless Telkom. Apparently my profile is activated and I should have VDSL. Everything working on their side, I'm stil on 15Mbps ADSL and the status of VDSL still shows as DOWN

Trying to explain to them what I have on my side is seriously migraine inducing pain. I'm being passed about from one line to another and the last woman went to a supervisor, came back and said if I have 15Mbps then I'm on VDSL because max ADSL is 10 :wtf:

I told her that's funny, because yesterday before I asked to switch to VDSL I was on 20Mbps.

Her response was to tell me she will transfer me to someone else, and she flicked me back to sales

So, back to the phone.

Ask to be put through to the technical department.

Ask to be put through to the technical department.

So much passing around. Now they tell me all they can do is rebuild the profile, and now I have to go back to 10213 so they can flick the switch which should have been done already.

So, called them now and all systems are down. Call back in an hour
