VDSL package but ADSL2+profile for 20mbps possible?

My Exchange is 20mbps-enabled now. Telkom say, because of particular equipment where my ADSL port is situated, I can get only 10mbps.

I have a silly unscientific question (that sprouts from wishful thinking): can one order a 20mbps line from a third party ISP, and request ADSL2+ profile, I live only 200m from the exchange, so I could do 20mbps no sweat, theoretically?..

Yeah, that should be possible.

A few users run 20Mbit ADSL 2+ lines due to them not owning a VDSL router or due to the exchange not being VDSL enabled.
ADSL 2+ 20Mbit still only has 1Mbit upload rate though, VDSL has 2Mbit upload.

What VDSL package? Quite a few ADSL-enabled exchanges were recently upgraded to handle 20Mbps ADSL service pending the installation of VDSL equipment.

Theory:
1. Although you live 200m from the exchange there might be a remote unit (e.g. UMC) between you and the exchange and that unit limits you to 10Mbps. As it is a physical connection, you will never get 20Mbps until they roll out MSANs and wipe out that unit.

2. It is possible that there multiple DSLAMs in your exchange and the one that you connect to (your port) is on a DSLAM that can only provide 10Mbps services due certain reasons. A port swop to a faster DSLAM will rectify that.

MickeyD, I so appreciate your answer! Yes, I called Telkom and they confirmed that they do have a unit, I think they called it a DP, or something, that limits my particular line as you described. Thumbs up for the explanation. Guess, I'll wait until they upgrade it :/

I've noted the guys running power to the MSAN's in my area.
When will the switch on expected take place and how will I know?

Firstly your service will drop unexpectedly for an hour or so (even longer if the paw-paw hits the fan). Then you'll get a phone call where they will try and smokkel you to sign up for a more expensive service.

I'm on 20mbit ADSL while I wait for VDSL. Seems OK so far, but it's still early days.
