Hi, looking to upgrade my netgear router to VDSL router for when I upgrade to VDSL end of the month. I'm about 800 meters from my DSLAM. You guys have any recommendations? 2k is my limit. Preferably something with a Broadcom chipset. Thanks

I used a Tp Link 9980 not bad at all for the price - I used it as a modem only routing functions were performed by other device. Its also not that expensive as well.

Still using a Billion 8800 nxl - saw them on special around R1200 online recently - there are some newer fancy Asus routers around -but 3x the price.

Not to try and derail from your question - friendly opinion/advice perhaps:

Why change to VDSL?

I found if you have "decent speed" on copper - ie - 12Mb + etc you won't really gain much by going VDSL.

You can get "Theoretical" faster upload speeds -but only slightly - and ONLY if you are very close with perfect copper.

What are your SNR values for down/up?

Does your current router show you any info/statistics of what your attainable rate is on Adsl2+?

There are a number of forums posts on the topic - but just want to a assist from personal experience - Often the expectation is you will see a world of difference when going to VDSL - which is sometime true - say your current exchange doesn't support ADSL2+ - and you are stuck on an older profile or a lot of congestion on the ports - and by some magic you have an exchange that supports VDSL = then perhaps it's worth it. General rule from my person experience is that you gain little if you are on decent ADSL2+ already.

2 cents :)

TP-LINK Archer VR400 is the best you will get, it uses a Broadcom modem and has 867Mbps 5GHz wireless AC and gigabit LAN.

Costs about ~R1500 and it will last you for years seeing as it can also be used with fibre.

Sorry to intrude but you seem like you may have an idea.

I have a 20mb/s adsl line and before I moved I used to get between 17,5 - 18mb/s download speeds. However since I moved speeds have dropped at my new place which is further from the exchange,I now only get 10.7mb/s on average.

Do you think me changing over to VDSL which my exchange does support btw would improve speeds for me?

No problem. I guess i would like to upgrade to VDSL for the extra upload speed and the less overhead that comes with it, i notice that some of my friends had less problems on VDSL if you have a good line and a decent router and being close to the DSLAM is a bonus. But also because ping tends to be slightly lower on VDSL profiles. but the biggest reason i want a new router will make it possible for me to get FTTH without having to upgrade again. And it will ony cost me an extra R25pm for the 20Mbps line rental. I had a Telkom technician come out and test my line on VDSL.

Actual rate (up) 1024 kbps
Actual rate (down) 12479 kbps
Output power (up) 8.5 dBm
Output power (downstream) 10.5 dBm
Line attenuation (up) 10.0 dBm
Line attenuation (downstream) 11.0 dB
Noise margin (up) 12.5 dB
Noise margin (downstream) 17.8 dB
Attainable rate 23092 Kbps

If you really really need the faster Wi-Fi get the VR600, I have the TP-Link D2 that has 5GHz 433Mbps wireless AC and in real world tests I get 130Mbps, that's more than enough for me and the VR400 should be even faster than that.

I personally would just save the R500 extra and get the VR400.

hey falcon786. we would need to see what line stats you have. If you are more than 1.6KM from the exchange it might struggle to keep the sync on VDSL

yeah i will quickly go check up on it. i game online and stream all with ethernet anyway..so the same chipset with less fancy Wifi really wont bother me much ;)

Your stats are really bad, I don't even know how you're syncing at 12Mbps, your SNR is 4.1dB, the minimum it should be is 6.0dB.

Contact whoever your line is with and report a fault.

Also you won't get VDSL because you're too far away, first get them to fix the line and see what speeds you get.

Yes it could be a fault because when I first moved here I used to get at least 13,5mb/s.I'm with Vox I thought it could be an ISP fault but I just used a Crystal web trial account and I'm getting the same 10.5mb/s speedtests.

Thanks.

It definitely is a line fault, no question about it, your SNR should not be below 6.0dB, it's a miracle you're syncing at all, you must have an amazing modem.

Yeah my Archer d7 was not performing so lekker here from the start it only gave under 10mb/s so it's relegated to a cupboard and the Telkom Huawei media gateway and tp link powerline wifi routers are doing duty currently. This Huawei HG532f which is a basic cheapie from Telkom actually has better 2,4ghz signal output and more stable wifi too compared to the archer d7 on 2,4ghz and the 5ghz band just doesn't have the range unfortunately.

I called Vox they have recreated the port and stats have changed but speedtest speeds are still the same at 10mb/s.

New stats:
Upstream line rate (kbit/s) 1021
Downstream line rate (kbit/s) 12478
Upstream maximum line rate (kbit/s) 1184
Downstream maximum line rate (kbit/s) 18212
Upstream noise safety coefficient(SNR) (dB) 10.8
Downstream noise safety coefficient(SNR) (dB) 6.5
Upstream interleave depth 0
Downstream interleave depth 0
Line standard ADSL_2plus
Upstream line attenuation (dB) 17
Downstream line attenuation (dB) 30
Upstream output power (dBmV) 11.9
Downstream output power (dBmV) 19.2

Apparently that was a call centre agent a technician will call me shortly.
