VDSL upgrade issues

Yes, was thinking that too, which is odd as I am less than 150m from the exchange. Might be bad copper I suppose, but it is odd given the downstream attenuation.

<edit>

It is even more odd that when I wanted to upgrade to 10Mb in 2011 my downstream SNR Db was 22.5 (can't remember what router I was using in those days), and the upstream was quite bad, but the 10Mb down and 1Mb up has been rock solid since I upgraded:

Think I will just suck and see when the time comes.

<further edit>
This is quite a handy calculator, but only does downstream and does not take SNR into account:

Are you sure that the exchange supports VDSL?

May only be able to support up to 20mbps ADSL...

Yes, I am sure, I spoke to the techie at the exchange when they did the upgrade a couple of months back. My service dropped and I wondered down the road to find out what was going on. I also recently had a call from Telkom sales asking if I wanted to upgrade to 20 or 40 Mb on a two year contract, which I politely declined.

VDSL works on a ethernet standard, therefore you need 802.1q (Vlan) tagged packets on this service. Telkom uses Vlan ID 835 (yes similar to the VPI/VCI), try and add that to your router DSL config and ask them to change you to a VDSL profile again. Why they wouldn't just use vlan 835 as the native vlan on the MSAN's no one knows. This would also explain why your line works when set to a ADSL2+ profile and not when being set as a VDSL port, but the Pace router does, because its pre-configured with the Telkom firmware and settings.

They always blame something else...
