Vdsl

Also called Telkom today, they said our exchange hasn't been upgraded yet, only 10mbps max. Also in an area which was supposed to be part of the launch area. I guess they are working on it though so now I wait!

Also thanks for the link above superspeed! Appreciated.

@Yuu & fxit_man it's a great pleasure! I have decided whatever info passes my desk I'll share with you guys. I also hate being left in the dark about these things. As and when I get anything relevant I'll help out where I can. I'm Telkom's unofficial spokesperson now it seems! Lol

Would VDSL improve or increase congestion? Is it just a thing at the exchange that allows faster speeds or a physical upgrade which provides more bandwidth?

Here's a reply somebody got from an mweb consultant asking this:

I just got off the phone with an mweb technical consultant. I needed my port reset and wanted to find out the status of my query. He was completely honest about the situation and just cut the BS straight away. He said that my exchange was clearly congested, one of the reasons being the upgrade of all lines from 384kbs to 1mbs. He also said that telkom need to upgrade their network urgently before increasing line speeds for everyone as it just adds to the problem. Apparently, telkom do not provide statistics for the capacity and usage at an exchange so ISPs are only able to speculate. Anyways, I asked him if the MSANs was going to make a positive difference and if it would be the upgrade I am looking for...he just laughed. He stated it would make it worse as the exchange was clearly well over its capacity already. He also identified that one of the ways in which telkom is reducing capacity in my area is to limit the lines from the exchange to 4mb even though the exchange can handle 10mbs. You can imagine what vdsl is going to do. I can't believe how this guy just put it all out there especially, when he admitted that none of the isps want to share this with clients.

So i guess i just want a second opinion.

Yes it will improve congestion because the backhaul is upgraded to 1GBPS fiber instead of the old ATM links which could only do 155mbps. Do the math.. 50 clients with 4mbps lines equals ?

VDSL uses MSAN which is connected with Metro Ethernet (fibre) directly and avoids the IPC contention which is as bad as 400:1 in some regions. That is a huge plus.

It is much, much worse than that. Let's take the main Randburg DSLAM - contention there is about 80:1. That means you have say 12400Mbps:155Mbps = 80:1. Or in other words for every one Mbps of bandwidth available there is actually demand for 80Mbps So if your exchange is highly congested you have contention of up to 400:1. Scary stuff

Now obviously not all users will try and pull 4Mbps at the same time but you only need 40 of them to do that and you are screwed....

DEMAND -- but -- NO SUPPLY

One wonders IF anyone from Telkom actually ever vists MyBB and reads about the incessant demand for more and better broadband.
How is / was it not possible to do some forward planning to cater for the insatiable demand ?

Are Telkom now going to be the next Eishkom ?

That would be the best thing they could possibly do right now! EVERYBODY else is here and they should be too. I'm sure if they read these posts (and maybe they do) they'll realise how much people hate them and start doing something about it

We received this from Telkom today:

Telkom’s Interest and Demand Register for VDSL Up to 20 & 40 Mbps Network rollout

Background

We refer to our previous communication in this regard where we detailed the planned network upgrade in selected ADSL service areas. The network upgrade entails replacing Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAMs) technology with Multi Services Access Nodes (MSANs) and the remote deployment of MSANs to Street Distribution Cabinets (SDCs) sites with concomitant fibre backhaul to effectively shorten the copper loop.

As you maybe already aware, Telkom Wholesale has launched the Up to 20 & 40 Mbps resell DSL product options on the 4th of March 2013.
Resell DSL Up to 20Mbps & 40Mbps will be available in geographic areas where the Telkom network upgrade has been completed, and coverage will increase as we continue to roll-out.

Interest and Demand Register

We are pleased to announce that we have created a Telkom’s Interest and Demand Register application / tool for VDSL 20 & 40 Mbps. This tool will firstly identify if the prospective customer already is currently in an enabled area, and secondly, if not, will capture their interest for the higher speed service. The Interest and Demand Register was introduced on 4 March 2013 on the following URL: www.telkom.co.za/interest

You are invited to link the Interest and Demand Register URL to your organization’s website, to join us in this Super Fast Broadband journey. You can do this with your customized imagery or you can utilize the picture below as a starting point to which you can integrate the URL .

Our future plans are to expand the Interest Register to provide you with a view of the future network rollout plans. As soon as we have more information available in this regard, we will communicate with you.

It is in the interest of Telkom and all our service provider partners who sell xDSL, to have a pro-active approach in demand management for the new generation broadband access services. Hopefully this will assist Telkom Wholesale & Networks to validate our rollout plan and also influence priority in terms of identifying changes to our plan.

So there you have it! Go and check it out

OK captured my details check what it says 0Mbps ...wakakakaaaa - Oliver would agree:D

Oops, your area is currently not enabled for the Super-Fast Broadband.

But don't worry, we have registered your interest for planning purposes and will endeavour to enable your area soonest.

Remember, it is possible for you to order broadband services up to 0Mbps right now while you wait for the higher speeds to be available.

Telkom don't register on here for a reason, can u imagine how they would be spammed. They already have a call center that is full with uneducated people (it is a lot better than it was 5 years ago). It would be creating more of a problem than a solution.

Blouberg has more telkom trucks here now than residents. I wonder when the VDSL will be completed. Getting a date from the techies is sketchy. Some say end of March, some say end of June.
