can someone please help me how to go about switching to vdsl line...i am suppose to be on vdsl but recently found out im om 20mb adsl2+...telkom call centers dont seem to no...the keep sayin i am on 20mb...i have the 20mb elite vdslpackage of telkom...i am thinking of cancelling cause i am paying for a contract that is not giving me what i am paying for....so please someone heeeelp

20mbps ADSL and 20mbps VDSL is almost the same thing. The differences are slight, and may or may not affect you much:
- Upload speed - max on ADSL is 1mbps and VDSL is 3.2mbps
- Latency on VDSL should be slightly better, as the lines are connected to newer and faster MSANs (as in they can process the network headers faster due to having faster CPUs and better algorithms)

Other than the above, it is one and the same thing. Pricing is also the same.

Anything from 10mbps - 20mbps will be charged for at the 20mbps price. ADSL/VDSL is marketed as a best effort service. 17.3mbps isn't too bad, but I get what you're saying.

I believe what he is saying is that basically if you are on 20MB ADSL it is the same thing as being on 20MB VDSL, so you are then not paying for something you are not getting.

Putting ... between sentences do not count as punctuation. Caps are used in the beginning of a sentence and when referring to yourself (I). There is a difference between "no" and "know". I can keep going, but my eyes are bleeding so I will rather just go do anything else.

so if it is basically the same thing why advertise as vdsl and providing a vdsl modem if a adsl2+ modem will work................does it matter how i write/type u do understand what i saying or asking..........i didnt ask for a punctuation lesson..............

ADSL2+ and VDSL at 20mbps are not equivalent.
ADSL2+ at 20mbps was wildly erratic for me. VDSL on the same line was perfect.
Have also noted others with similar experience.

If you're sold VDSL at 20mbps you should get VDSL at 20mbps.
If you've been sold 20mbps then they can provide you with anything I guess.

Tell Telkom that your line modulation is ADSL2+ and not VDSL and that they should please change it to VDSL.
The caveat is that your exchange needs to support VDSL.
Just keep trying different consultants until one gets the point :) ... or move your line to a real ISP :p

BTW "..." these are Ellipses.
The ellipsis can be used to indicate a pause in the flow of a sentence . I like using them :). Think long pause.

Just want to clarify for anyone who reads this thread.

VDSL actually has slightly worse ping than ADSL because it uses interleaved path mode instead of ADSL's fast path mode. This gives VDSL greater resilience to packet loss at the expense of slight ping increase. Mine went up from about 6/7ms on adsl to 9/10ms.

Being newer VDSL also has a lower overhead. Which means you'll get slightly more of your rated line than you would with ADSL. 17mb down/ 0.8 up on ADSL to 18 down/ 1.8 up. You will only ever get 3mb upload on a 40mb line.

As for switching over all I can do is wish you good luck. It took me about 3 weeks, over 4 hours of waiting on hold, multiple callouts and a replaced drop (the line that goes from the pole to my house) to get changed from 20mb ADSL to VDSL. Personally I'd say it's not worth shortening your life over but that's for you to decide, who knows maybe you'll get someone who knows what they're talking about. Good luck!

thanks for the positive replies guys...ill just keep annoying Telkom consultants and log faults till i come write.

Hey, I am looking into also upgrading to VDSL but I am skeptical of the speeds that I might get. How far are you from you're nearest DSLAM? That 17.30 mbps you're getting is actually very good!

I have heard of people getting much less.

Due to DSL overheads, You will never get full speed. ie. 10mbps will perform at around 8.5mbps max, 20mbps will perform at around 18mbps max.

You will just need to check whether your DSLAM can support VDSL modulation, also how far you are from the exchange, you can generally work this out from your Attenuation and SNR rates.
