Vegetarian Week

The problem with going veg is that it seemingly makes people rely on a lot of starch, which is fattening - rice, pasta, bread!

Actually, in general, vegan and vegetarian diets are very good for weight loss, despite the higher carb intake. This is because of the lower calorific density of plant foods. Just don't go overboard with the cheese and you'll be fine.

Quinoa (pronounced Keen-Wah) is a plant seed that is very high in protein and nutrients.
It's a great meat substitute! I also love the way it tastes.

Couscous is another good option, you toss it with veggies. Mix in some pepper and other spices before adding the water and it will draw out the flavour when you add the boiling water.

I don't know if you've also excluded fish, but I spent a few months as a Pescetarian (Vegetarian that still eats fish) and I ate a lot of steamed fish. Bought a 3-stack steamer and you chuck fishies into one layer, veggies into another and even rice into the third and put on for 35min. Voila, delicious and healthy supper.

There's so much that can be done. After a while it becomes easier to first think about what Vegetables you want for supper. I got tired of the typical MEAT + STARCH (with veggie afterthought) routine. I still sometimes skip on meat just because I can.

I love my vegetables.
And, on occasion, when my body feels like it needs a protein bump, my go-to foods are fish or eggs instead of meat.

Good luck Blu! Keep going! And drink lots of water :)

So many websites out there that deal with specifically with vegetarian/vegan cooking. So many fantastic dishes out there. If it weren't for meat cravings after I haven't eaten if for a week or so, I would totally go vegetarian.
2 popular ones to get you started:
101 cookbooks for vegetarian - http://www.101cookbooks.com/
PostPunkKitchen for vegan - http://www.theppk.com/

And if you want to get a book, I can highly recommend Ottolenghi's Plenty. Ok, I don't actually have it, but I've made so many things from it (found online) and they have all been amazing.

We decided to go vegetarian for a week, every so often. It's a bit challenging getting the menu right, though.

I have done veg curry, salads galore, baked beans and tonight is veg biryani.

Any of you ever do this and where do you get inpiration for good menus from ?

Thanks

Lol and you were questioning people who fast. This is just as "pointless" :p

I had to laugh at some restaurant the other day. In the menu they have 'V' for the vegetarian dishes. We were having breakfast & the one item had : eggs & BACON, but was marked as vegetarian!.

We have to be so careful when fasting and eating out cos alot of the restaurants don't actually know what vegetarian means.

back to the op. We eat alot of soya products when we fasting. 'Frys' has an excellent range & should be easily available. Sausages, hot dos (very dry) burger patties, lasagne...long list.....even soya mince.
beans
lots of potatoes, fried, chips etc.
herbs
breyani
pasta
veggie bakes
