Due to the general strike at the Post Office the chances are that you'll not be receiving the notice to renew your car licence timeously.

Make sure that you renew before the expiry date because the Traffic Dept. has no sympathy.

Same applies to the notices for renewing your driver's licence.
 
OH crap my one car expired last month thanks for the reminder.
 
You can use last year's renewal notice and go to any place you can renew the licence.
 
Mine expired in April 2014 and I renewed it September 2014 :o. Got penalised about R250.

I was surprised that my next renewal date is Sept 2015. Though it would be Apr 2015

The renewal date moves to 1 year after the payment if you are late.

We bought both our cars in the same month. And my Boat trailer was in the same month. So I just paid the boat late so that it moves to a new month. Just to spread it out a bit.

Edit: Just fill in the green form when renewing if you don't have the renewal. Quick and easy. We normally just renew at the PO.

the penalties are the april to sept fees, and then you paid Sept this year until next.

Nobody should have sympathy for you, checking if your disk is valid is part of your pre trip inspection. Do you moan at the place that replaces your tyres too because they didn't send you a letter about it?

My post office is almost always deserted on Saturday mornings (Blairgowrie). It's a pleasure doing business there. I would never go to the traffic department.

I thought I'd pay the penalty and and still have to renew in April. It's good to know.
 
Mine expired in March / April. I am still waiting for the renewal notice.

I noticed it end of April / May, so that's when I paid. Had to pay a penalty because of their shoddy primitive "system".

Thats great if you drive your car everyday but if you have a few cars and or trailers/ caravans its not as easy especially when you dont get the renewal notice.

Sounds like 1st world problems to me. Annual reminder on gmail works wonders.
 
Our licence expired on 31/12/2014. Renewal letter never arrived. Did the whole Cape Town online thing and now we are awaiting the license in the post. The licence was renewed within the 21 day grace period so no penalty was charged.

I've been told that the expired license stays valid for 30 days before the cops will start complaining. How valid is this and where would one go to read the actual laws pertaining to this?

Note the supposed difference between the grace period for renewal and the validity of a expiring license disk.
 
I did the cpt online renewal
Worked like a charm
Received the new licence in 8 days.
 
I went to the post office to renew my car Licence. They said I can't renew and gave this reason. I'm quite sure I received a fine somewhere along the line.

In this day and age, all of this should be done automatically over the Internet.
