Hi all
For those recording fuel usage, km's traveled etc, whether for work, personal or SARS reasons, what method do you use?

Do you use a manual log book which you write in to after each trip / day, do you use a automatic GPS based type log book device or do you use some sort of app and manually enter the data?

I'm looking for a solution for the vehicles in my small business. I tried the "Little log book" automatic GPS based device but it didn't quite work out. You have to make sure it's on every time you start up the vehicle, it gets disconnected since it plugs in to the sig lighter socket, people plug it out to charge their phones etc and forget to plug it back in.

I'm thinking a old school manual book walso won't really work, because people will forget to enter the data etc and then try and thumb suck data by the end of a week or month.

Any ideas?

I use a company that does tracking, then you setup all your clients, suppliers and employee's homes etc, then you can pull logbooks with a few clicks

They can install you a switch close to the driver, and then you select business or private.

They have an API, so you can integrate it with your company software, mine linked to my jobcard system

I used to use a LittleLogBook until the circuit board blew. Was not keen on spending the money again. There are a few Android apps available. They can be set up to start automatically when the phone connects to the cars Bluetooth and they automatically upoad the data to Google Drive etc.

Which company?

We use Tracker Skytrax and I believe it is a fleet designed product.
We mostly use it for personal logbook purpose and the handy live tracking and panic/assist button features.

How about wiring it directly so it turns on with the ignition?

In the end decided to go for Tracker Skytrax. So far it looks like it will work well for all our needs. I like that it has a app so I can very easily see where all vehicles are, I also like that you can add notes to trips apart from marking them as business or personal.

What's the price to get one?

Ok thanks. I pay around 125 for the car track tracker and I can also pull reports as well

We use a similar system, the only difference being our switch to toggle pvt/business is located on a remote attached to the keyring. Also has a handy emergency button on it to call the tracking company in an emergency.

I work for MiX Telematics International so I can't directly help with local solutions, but you might want to check out MiX Africa at http://www.mixtelematics.co.za
In terms of recovery our Beame has a good recovery record. You are looking for log book functionality and that is definitely something you can do with some of the fleet management oriented solutions available.

Sadly I can't give you details on what exactly is offered by MiX Africa since I work for the Central Service Organisation and we are part of the international group.

Coincidentally my wife is on some trucking groups on Facebook (I really don't know why) but she tells me despite all the horror stories you will see on HelloPeter we are seen in pretty high regard by the local logistics industry. Having spent a few late night ironing out issues for them (Xinergistix, OneLogix, a few others) I can say we are very committed to supporting our fleets.

Hope that helps.

I use Tracker SkyTrax on my car. Works very well, but not cheap.
