So how much are you guys paying? Extentions or plans from other companies?

Model of vehicle as well?

If you buy a Forester or an Outback from me, you will get 5 year/150 000 km FULL Maintenance without it costing you one shiny cent! :D

Toyota's new maintenance plan sounds rather interesting, any idea if the rest will follow suit Fazda?

So if I need a battery replacement or oil, covered too? ;)
Control arm, suspension without a single question?

Outside of the standard 5 year, it can get pricey. R30,000 (IIRC) for an extra 2 years/20,000km on an Audi

Everything is covered, unless there are signs of abuse.

All you pay for is tyres and fuel during that period.

I pay zero rand. Don't believe in maintenance plans, they are a complete rip off. I just pay for my repairs the old fashioned way, with cold hard cash.

Ok.

So decent then :P
Yup! :D
Signs of abuse like?
Fairly obvious - it's very simple to see when a car has been treated badly, as it carries the scars to prove it. We have an XV in at the moment with a front shock and control arm that is so bent that it is running with HUGE negative camber on the front left wheel
and he actually hit a culvert at some crazy speed on a dirt road - maintenance will not cover the repair. The guys in the WRX STi's who race them, chip them and break driveshafts by dropping the clutch at 7500 rpm, tend to lose their maintenance as well....:)

That's exactly the problem with a maintenance plan. Determining whether something is abuse or not is extremely subjective. Obviously the maintenance plan providers are going to try like hell to repudiate any claim you have and accuse you of abuse to make sure they don't ever have to pay a cent. I've heard of it happening over and over again.

 So you enjoy abusing your car and trying to cover it up??!

It is SO simple to see whether a car has been abused or not, and NO we don't try and duck and dive - everything IS covered, provided you drive like a human being and have the car maintained correctly.

No, what I mean is that unscrupulous maintenance plan providers accuse motorists of abuse in order to avoid having to pay out for any maintenance plan claims.

I don't need to cover anything up, I don't have a maintenance plan :)

Yes, you have made it clear that you don't believe in them - all I am saying is that we will pay for everything unless it is obvious that one of our cars has been raced or has accident damage of some sort. Surely you don't expect us to pay for that?

.... we will pay for everything ...

Bud, there is no such thing as a free lunch.
1) The maintenance cost factor is calculated into the purchase price so maintenance is paid for up front..
2) Therefore the purchaser still pays extra in finance charges to cover such costs.
3) The sum assured is calculated on the purchase price of the vehicle so the poor sucker is paying insurance on the portion allocated to maintenance costs.

Why is this phenomenon generally only prevalent is SA?
What discount will Subaru give if it offered its product with only CPA coverage? (six months)

I would never renew a maintenance plan when it expires. I just take the cars and bakkies to my local workshop, who does a better job and charges 1/4 of what the agents charge

Except when a single issue can cost 40% of the value of the car ;)

Browsing the Audi forum I've seen guys that bought RS4s and 'one issue' is costing R50k+

I make it very clear to my customers that they will be getting this package if they pay full price for the car, in lieu of discount. the plan would have cost them 32000, had they paid for it separately. the costs are covered by dealer and SSA ( one third dealer, two thirds SSA)
By the way we are under NO obligation to offer anyone a discount in the first place, and this is a damned nice way of getting something for your money.
And no, we didn't increase the price of the cars before we did this either.

Your final section implies that we have some sort of control over the tax situation in SA which we don't. Taxes form approximately 35% of the final price - 21% various duties, plus 14% VAT

This part alone, says that you don't know what a maintenance plan is, either that, or you cannot wait to throw money away at your car.
The plan will look after all eventualities from normal servicing to whatever else you need to spend on your car. You cannot just look at the cost of a service and try and calculate costs from working out what a normal service would cost you.
Maintenance covers the entire car for everything, so in effect, if you are extending one, you will not have to pay the guy down the road anything, unless you intend keeping the car for the rest of your life.
