OK, this is the deal. Whenever you do not have your foot on the petrol the vehicle stalls (switches off). What could cause this? It also idles very low. This then has the added effect that the power steering also disengages

It started over the weekend when I stuck without petrol (gauge is slightly faulty in that it shows more fuel that what's actually in the tank :D )

So I got petrol and put it in. Immediately this issue started.

Any ideas? A friend of mine has one of these diagnostic machines and when I plug the thing in it picks up zero problems.

plugs

no spark in the plugs or distributor

happened to my golf ...it would start but just touch the pedal and it would make brrrr and then cut off

Clean out your fuel filter when you ran out of petrol all the gunk in the bottom of your tank is probably sitting in the filter.

Need more details, like what car it is and year model.

Fuel filter is a good one to look at.
Could also be a loose bungie cord or faulty spark plug.
Could also be a dirty air filter.

Gunk? I don't know where you buy your petrol but a couple of years ago the mechanic removed the petrol tank from my, then at the time 10 years old, car and it was pristine inside.

they just advise that you dont get stuck without petrol.....the injectors dont like it.

New fuel filter and chuck a bottle of injector cleaner into your tank as well.

Update:

This morning I revved the schitt out of that mofo (see what I did there? :p) and the issue seems to have been resolved. I'm pretty sure it was some junk in the fuel filter.

Thanks for the replies folks!

Had this problem a while back as well. I'd be travelling at 80km/h and as soon as I released my foot off the accelerator, the car would stall. Got onto the N1, took the car up to 180km/h which really got the fuel pumping and the problem disappeared.
