My Toyota HiLux 4x4 DC bakkie is insured via Outsurance, and has a Tracker unit installed, as my insurer insists on it.

A few days ago I received an email from Tracker, saying that my Tracker unit had developed a fault, and they said I needed to take it to my nearest Tracker fitment to replace the tracker unit. It seems the tracker battery was kaput.

All well and good I thought, except I discovered that my nearest Tracker fitment centre is in Paarl, WC :erm:

That would have been a 340km round trip... expensive in fuel cost. So I called Tracker, and they said they would send a technician out to me.

He arrived earlier today, and fitted a new tracker unit, and tested it. All is now working OK again.

I must admit I was impressed with their service.:)

my friends' toyota yaris also developed a fault on the tracking system, TRACKER dispatched a tech to come and fix. I wonder if there is a trend going on?

It could also be that they did a batch release of new software for the units and it bricked some of them.

hey guys...

I dont know if im expecting too much but i have to ask... If you install a tracker on your vehicle... should your premiums decrease as you are now less of a liability? so to speak? i want to have it fitted at my cost

I know that most of my friends and colleagues at work have been getting calls from TRACKER - you basically get installation FREE but you must pay per month for it.

I speak under correction but TRACKER lost the contract they had with EMS at the beginning of this year, since then I've seen them advertising everywhere.

There are two issues at play here.

1: Do you just want a tracking service to get an insurance reduction? In that case, there are dead cheap knock-and-drop options out there that will cost way less than Tracker (like R60/month). Outsurance recognises some of them. Just don't expect them to give you much customer care or actually recover your car if it gets hijacked.

2: Do you want a tracking service to recover your car and/or help you in the case of a hijacking/kidnapping? Then it is in your interest to go for the most expensive one you can afford, with the best resources, right? You save money for this need and you're just going to regret it at the worst time. The increased cost doesn't result in a bigger saving on your insurance premiums however.

Which one of the above you favour depends on you. I picked 2, so Tracker Skytrax for me (I'm also happy with their service). FYI: they have a discounted premium if you're with some of their partner insurance companies (so far they've recognised Outsurance and Hollard for me), R199/month. There are a bunch of other big ones: Netstar, Matrix, C Track etc. Your mileage will also vary depending which service you take from them (e.g. radio-based only, the cheapest; or GSM+GPS based, more expensive).
