Hi all,

I want to get a tracker in my vehicle.
Suggestions on how one can do this and where to go?

Now, before we say "Tracker" - I was thinking about what have others have done as cheaper alternatives or have found that do the job just as well as others etc.

Is it for a single vehicle or are you thinking of moving to fleet tracking?
Either way I would recommend http://www.mixtelematics.com/solutions

No ways!!! Been there done that got the badge, car no comms, GONE!!! I would really recommend tracker as they have the best chance of finding your car again. Police heli and cars equipped with tracking devices as well as recovery teams.

Imposssssiiiiiibruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, they do have to .... unless they running on Tony Starks infinite power source!!!!! Power and ground necessary to charge backup battery circuit as well as the unit itself!

And if they use battery operated system, then it needs to be swapped out with new batteries every few months or so

I got Tracker through my insurer. Installing one dropped my monthly premium enough to cover the Tracker fee...

Dude, goto electromann and order the GPS unit, hide it in your car and wire it to the battery (dont forget to fuse it) Add an MTN or VC sim with tons of data. easy peasy.

Im assuming that you dont want a tracker service, just want to be able to locate the vehicle?

The battery lasts 3 to 5 years. They will replace the unit free of charge when the battery dies if you pay an extra R10/m

VW told me that I could only get their unit installed if I wanted to keep my car's warranty as they no longer allow any tracking units that have to be wired into the car, something about a Touareg's wiring harness getting fried and the vehicle being written off as a result. I believe some of the other tracking companies now also have battery operated units, Tracetec was the only company that offered it when I got my car.

Firstly its a 12 year old Astra, I doubt it will get stolen :) Secondly I can log in and track it any time I like so I don't think comms will be an issue. Lastly I sit next to the one guy that works on some of the comms services so that kinda does help too :D

+1
They told me the same when I bought my Golf 6 GTI. Plus on my Golf 5 (had a Netstar), I had to replace my car's battery every 12-18 months. In the 4 years I drove it, I had 3 batteries. On my current car, I replaced the battery a couple of months ago for the first time (car bought July 2010).

I have tested an OBDII unit in my car, so you do get those too. Does not affect your warranty at all. Simply plug it into your OBDII port and your set. Problem is that if your OBDII port is easy to reach then it is not a very secure solution. There are also units that just require 12V from ACC circuit, they have their own internal batteries for when the car is switched off.
