Very happy with ADSL

Something ells to think of, who do you pay for your Internet access? Your ISP. The Telkom ADSL line work fine. If your ISP is Telkom you picked them. Lets say Atlantic or MWEB has 6000 ADSL subscribers. and they are not happy then they can force Telkom to supply more bandwidth. They will talk on behalf of 6000 subs and they have a 22 million rand contract with Telkom. Telkom will be forced to do something. Why does everyone support Telkom by using them as an ISP?

A 64k Diginet line will set you back R1400/m and ISP R700-R2000

rofl, ok now you have clearly showed us all you are clueless.

Nevermind, your "something ells" to think about, try looking at your first flawed statement, before making another EVEN MORE flawed.

1stly... the ISP has no control, they are simple ressellers, of the Telkom ISP product. So wth are you talking about.

2ndly... "A 64k Diginet line will set you back R1400/m and ISP R700-R2000" ye right... lol... and i presume it has a 50:1 contention ratio on the 64k. cos thats the only way it can be at that price.

May I please have the details of this offer?

If I could have a decent 64k line at this rate, I'm going for it!

The quote I had was a mere R1600 for the Telkom line, and the cheapest decent bandwith I could find was around R3 500 per month.

Looks to me like slaaiblaar is a gimmick account, and he keeps trolling this thread (which is against the rules of most forums, and should be the same with this one too)

I found this link for a R1000/m http://www.zanet.co.za/FAQ/Diginet_Alternatives.htm

I am hapy with my adsl...most of the time.
For browsing it is always fine.
For gaming...I can only play on SA servers...overseas servers are useless.
For P2P it sumtimes works sumtimes dusnt. Sometimes i can get over 8K p/s...but sometimes i cant even connect!

I cant stand the port prioritization but think the 3 gig cap is necessary. If there was no cap everyone would use kazza day and night. There would probably be no bandwith and u wouldnt be able to do anytin at all.

PS: I live in Sandton and have a friend in Linksfield with ADSL. His never works and is always slow. I think that ure exchange makes a big difference in the quality or ure adsl

Sure I might be clueless, but all I wanted to say was that the ISP has more power (in numbers) and when you pay them they must supply the goods. Where they get it from is there problem.

Ps. skip the personal remarks

you willing to pay so much money for a diginet "64k" yes it is 24 hour but loko how much you paying for such slow speed
try a 2mb adsl conection for half the price of this adsl(madrid)
price of a leased line here in south afrca??
cheers

It is true that MyAdsl is the perfect opportunity for Telkom to do their market research and to find ways to tweak the service, preferably to offer flexible packages for different needs. The question is, do they actually care?[?] Mr White has done nothing but criticizing the forum and he hasn't really made a big effort to answer these issues. Yes, the response we had earlier did highlight some issues but there are many more and it really seems their response was a quick "cut and paste" jobbie instead of a well research response. It is very opbvious that there are different requirements that can be satisfied with the same physical equipment and a different configuration setting and definitely with different price tags. Mr White plays it safe because he is concerned about the technical ability within Telkom to deal with flexibility!

Mr White cant keep sweeping us under the carpet all the time.
Sooner or later it will all come out.

Perhaps in the USA or Europe, but not in South Africa. Telkom has constucted the ADSL network in a way that ISP's cannot "supply the goods", even if they wanted to. The ISP cannot circumvent the Port Prioritisation. They cannot ignore the 3gb cap. All they are doing is providing Telkom login user names, passwords, and a teeny bit of additional technical support. Take a look at what this ISP has to say in this regard: http://www.imaginet.co.za/news.asp?action=shownews&nid=38

With that being said, there are ISP's out there (such as Megawan) who are looking at ways to short circut the pathetic international offering from Telkom, typically using PPTP/VPN technology.

Personal remarks? Thats what you get when post ignorant, unresearched comments on a public forum. Happy with your ADSL connection? Thats great, but you won't get anywhere trying to convince the rest of us who actually use our connections for more than just web browsing. You pay R1000 p/m for browsing, when you could get almost the same results with R100-R300 ISDN connection? Riiiiight.

You're not perchance related to TheRabbi? The fixation with BMW's and Toyota's gives you away.

I fail to see where this discussion is going. This is my side of the story. My dial-up is faster when I get capped, but my telephone bill then goes through the roof and beyond. Funny that nobody in these forums ever mention the telephone bill when they make comparisons between the systems. We also settled on an additional (second) ADSL account and ferry in between the accounts when we reach our capped amount.

Everybody moans about the ADSL and we cannot understand why. It beats paying R 3 500 for a Diginet leased line and it certainly beats a dial-up when looking at the telephone bill side of things. We use a Planet Router/ADSL combo box (R 1 200) and I have a Mitel SME Server (free, also known as the e-smith sme server) acting as a proxy and firewall between my network and the ADSL. We are a branch office for a Stellenbosch based development company and uses it for browsing and mail primarily. We share the line between two companies and the lot cost me R 600 per month. It certainly beats my R 4 500 telephone account previously.

My biggest hassle is that I do not want the second account but would have loved Telkom to rather allow me to buy more bandwidth. We have some dealings with Telkom as a third party product provider and let me tell you, they are busy changing. And fast. As one of the senior management in Telkom commented: "The sucess of ICASA will be measured by government on how much percentage market share they can tear away from Telkom". So let's just keep the gentle pressure on them by giving them good guidance and advice on the way forward while speaking our minds in a nice manner! :-) I think this forum has an important role to play in that respect.

<br />Too be completely honest I can understand slaaiblar's sentiments, I mean if the alternative international (read Capped) route was as fast or slighly faster than a dial up I would be able to live with ADSL and I would probably also post a message saying "I am happy with ADSL, all I do is this and that and I have no problems".

slaaiblaar it would seem in your particular case ADSL is fine, if the alternative route after being capped was as fast as a dial up account I would be happy, and if the network shaping allowed others to use thier particular applications they would be happy, I think this highlights the need for a forum like this. This forum can serve a perpose by highlighting problems with the service and allow Telkom to adjust and tweak the service to provide a better service, all in all Telkom needs a system to understand its clients needs and requirements.

Telkom can improve the service by tweaking it, no need to implement expensive solutions ...simple stuff like open the alternative bandwidth slightly so it can perform as well as a dial up, set up a system whereby users can request special ports to be granted a decent priority ect ect.

SuPaStA howzit:)

just wanted to mention something to the fact that you said in the one post ( Kazaar and imesh is caped)

well i agree with you there , but as adsl launched i hooked a client onto it , and tried a quick test for p2p download.
i managed to get a average of 78.8kb download and increases and decreases. but i tried a few months later , it's like a standerd 33.6 modem.. mabey even slower.
i think its the cause of all the p2p users and telkom not wanting you to chow all their bandwith.
might be better to use a 128K ISDN rather and get a 8 - 16kb download than a 3.00kb or a 0.79kb download

Seems like when adsl was first released in SA it was working fine(no cap, good speed)except for the price of course.
but not now,If u get 10kbs average in kazaa u doing good[V]

Yeah its a real pity.

anyways just got off call with telkom. they recon they had a problem yesterday with the Adsl international link, but it sorted out today they claim.

how is your adsl links now ?
still slow?

Just by reading what Slaaiblar said in the early threads of this topic it rings clear to me once more that Telcrap is living off ignorent statments like those. You need to realise you can get those speeds on 128K ISDN for video confrencing my good friend and you can confrence for as long as you like without worrying about a cap. Oh and tell me how does it feel to pay R100 per gig of data? Much more than it costs me on 128k to download that over two weekends.. thanks for being a moron.. you are the weakest link goodbye.

Fantasy is what people want, reality is what they need.
