Very happy with ADSL

I use my ADSL to chat to family in other countries using MSN Messenger. IT WORKS GREAT. I just cap myself per day to make sure I do not exceed 3 gig.
If I have some bytes left at the end of the month. I download like crazy at very high speeds because all of you are capped.

If all you mostly using adsl is to chat to family maybe you should stick to dial-up.Unless you so rich that you dont mind throwing away money on a service that is not up to standard.
Next time you talking to your family overseas ask them if they ever heard of a 3 gig cap.
Another thing try getting these "Very High Speeds" on a p2p program like kazaa thanks to telkom's port priotisation this is not possible.

I use this service because it is the only 24/7 option in this country.I have adsl in my house and spain,I pay far less than what we paying over here,I dont even pay for my router,im not capped,and I get FAR better speeds than telkom adsl.
You sure you dont work for telkom marketing dept.?

Glad you are discussing some relevant points. There are definitely some strong feelings about these issues, but I feel one can approach it in a more constructive manner than the last two remarks. I therefore deleted the last two postings. Well, the point of the matter is that if slaaiblaar is happy to be ripped off and to pay a heck of a lot of money for simply using the connection to video conference, then so be it. He/She is making Telkom extremely happy.

The only problem I have with slaaiblaar is the fact that he/she seems gleeful that some of us are capped at the end of the month. Thats just plain not nice.

dudes, you have got to stop comparing this to international costs. Yes, it is a ripoff. But remember, compared with EVERYTHING else available in this country (and I have used everything - I have clients with Cybertrade 2way 128k sat, 1 way infosat (not anymore), I've had 56k and ISDN, and my best friend sadly tried megawan) it is superior for browsing, chatting (IM and video), email, limited downloads, and most importantly, doing all this 24/7. I could not run my business without ADSL - I need to be able to check product info etc and recieve emails 24/7, and I am only one person (ie I can't afford a corporate solution). Hence, I am happy with ADSL. I could be much happier - the 1 meg ADSL and 3 meg cable I've used overseas are AMAZINGLY AWESOME, but they are not available.

Slaaiblaar,

Try this on for size. Download a couple of stuff untill you reach 3 gig's. If you get good download speeds you can do this in about 2 days. Then try browsing international sites. When this kinda thing happens to me, I get the image in my mind that Telkom took a 56k modem, hooked it on a router and are now routing all capped users through this 56k modem.. he he.. Browsing internationally is not an option when capped... 100% useless.

Getting back to the original point on messaging. Although Slaaiblaar uses video conferencing I personally like to chat keyboardwise now and then. It is definitely not very efficient on Dial-Up. ADSL is designed for this type of service. But again, Telkom should see the light and sell always on, low bandwidth to those that want it at a lower price. It will solve Mega problems. More than one package. It will immediately make more bandwidth available to the power hungry users. In that way we will all be happy and even Telkom may be.

You are getting ripped off. Granted, South Africa is located in a not-so-optimal spot, but your telecom company is robbing you blind and the government protects their rights to do so.

Too be completely honest I can understand slaaiblar's sentiments, I mean if the alternative international (read Capped) route was as fast or slighly faster than a dial up I would be able to live with ADSL and I would probably also post a message saying "I am happy with ADSL, all I do is this and that and I have no problems".

slaaiblaar it would seem in your particular case ADSL is fine, if the alternative route after being capped was as fast as a dial up account I would be happy, and if the network shaping allowed others to use thier particular applications they would be happy, I think this highlights the need for a forum like this. This forum can serve a perpose by highlighting problems with the service and allow Telkom to adjust and tweak the service to provide a better service, all in all Telkom needs a system to understand its clients needs and requirements.

Telkom can improve the service by tweaking it, no need to implement expensive solutions ...simple stuff like open the alternative bandwidth slightly so it can perform as well as a dial up, set up a system whereby users can request special ports to be granted a decent priority ect ect.

Telkom have Deliberately made adsl a product that is not worth investing your hard earned cash in.So as not to loose any of the millions they get from their diginet lines and the pathetic "isdn".
Look at how they advertising isdn on tv,seeing as adsl is their "new" product why dont we see any advertising on tv/papers about it??
They just released this product because they had to,it was long overdue.
Im sure Telkom never expected anything like myadsl.

It is true that MyAdsl is the perfect opportunity for Telkom to do their market research and to find ways to tweak the service, preferably to offer flexible packages for different needs. The question is, do they actually care?[?] Mr White has done nothing but criticizing the forum and he hasn't really made a big effort to answer these issues. Yes, the response we had earlier did highlight some issues but there are many more and it really seems their response was a quick "cut and paste" jobbie instead of a well research response. It is very opbvious that there are different requirements that can be satisfied with the same physical equipment and a different configuration setting and definitely with different price tags. Mr White plays it safe because he is concerned about the technical ability within Telkom to deal with flexibility!

Let me tell you that I've been capped and had to fall back to my dialup modem but I did not complain because I know what ADSL offered me. I know everyone say it is a rip of but why did you get it? The 3-gig cap was always there although they only enforced it later. The connection speed is not to bad if you take the results I’ve posted. I do not see anyone complaining when they only connect at 34k/bits with a dialup. (Almost half speed of a 56k modem)

When you buy a Corolla Tazz for R75 000.00 also a rip of. Do you go back to Toyota and ask why it can only do 160km/h and where are the electric windows.

You are getting what you asked for. So use it what it is meant for.
