Very slow 3G

Got some good news for a change. The Network guys made some changes last night and it did help. For the first time since I got my card five weeks ago I'm getting more than 10Kb/sec. My speed is now about 14Kb/sec. This is of cause not what it should be but at least an improvement!

V3G: Do you know when they are going to attend to the same problem in Moreleta Park?

Better check out Melkbos as well. This thing isn't working, even two blocks away.

I've been uploading and download 50-100 MB files the past week I can see it going up and down all the time. Mostly down. But every now and again I get 35 KBps downloads or 8 KBps uploads for like 5-10 seconds!

Definately something wrong ... please check it out V3G.

Hi V3G

Once Vodacom has upgraded the network, will it help with the upload speeds, or will it still be faster to send the data with via the post office?

For the foreseeable future the upload speed will be 64Kb/s. Once the terminals become available, it can be upgraded.

Most people won't notice the asynchronous nature (384K down / 64K up) as most speed sensitive stuff is done in the downlink direction (like browsing) while a lot of the uplink stuff is cached and streamed up by the application, for example mail where your mail client will upload the mail, in the background, to a relay like smtp.vodacom.co.za.

Having said that, forumites like biometrics uploading 50 - 100MB files is probably pushing the limits a bit and can do with something like HSDPA! As well as some stability....

Which terminal are you reffering to?

I do a lot of uploading to our website, so it is important to me.

Terminals would be data cards and cellphones that can support more than 64kbits/s on upload...

We expect the first HSDPA cards late this year. All depends how quickly the manufacturers can get them out. I would venture not to expect a wide range of options before Q1 / Q2 2006.

I have been using Vodacom 3G now for 8 week, and in that time I basically had only 2 or 3 hours of good speeds. Today I'm only getting 1.5 kbytes/sec.

I have a lot of work to do today and sadly again I would not be able to do my work.

I have already spent more the R100 on calls to the helpdesk, must I make another 20 Minute call to the helpdesk?

I am very unhappy!!!!

At this rate it might be cheaper for you to move.... :o

We seem to be struggling with your area, I assume you're at home in Moreleta Park?

Won't you run the Telkom speed test and post here? I want to run it at the same time and resubmit to the engineers. I just got 278K.

I phone now and find out what's up.

Speed test from Pretoria: Moreleta:
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 326.83 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 12.5 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 1.5 (kiloBytes/second)

Hi... Just wanted to add, Im in fearie Glen here is my Telkom Test
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 54.711 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 74.6 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 9.1 (kiloBytes/second)

If I could just suggest something here, when posting speed test results, could forumites please also post the 2G cellid that their ordinary cellphone shows at the time - I know it's flawed bcos there might be another tower within range, but it should be accurate enough...:)

How do one get the 2G cellid ?
If you have a Vodacom sim card in your cell phone [unless your cellphone is like 10 years old or something], you can enable a setting on the phone [via menu options] to show you the name of the cell tower [i.e. 2G cell tower] that your cellphone is getting a signal from, if the same tower also has 3G equipment on it, it should also say "3G Enabled"...

PS: I think it might be a better idea if I merged this thread in with the "Vodacom Network Problems" thread, forumites what say you?

Thanks IC; but I do not have a Vodacom sim card in my cell; I'm using the "Other" network for my voice calls.

Please do not merged in the other thread, this is my personal thread about my "V3G experience" :D
