Very slow 3G

A Vodacom technician visited me today. He recons the problem is with the network, and they will send out a network specialist to sort this out.

Hoop the network specialist will be able to fix this :(

Hi BBSA

Did you ever get this sorted out, and in which area do you have this problem?

Hi the problem that you are having with the slow download (7kbs)maybee that you are a running an anti virus or anti spy ware that may be trying to scan you internet download that would slow thngs down just a thought then again it maybe the site your going to. New and uptodate sims are always a great idea.

Hi trws

No, not yet. It is even worse today. Only get about 1.5KB/sec

I'm in the Centurion/PTA area

Seems if there is lots of problems in PTA, and Vodacom battels to sort them out

Thanks for the reply Bundy2005

I have disabled my anti-virus and did a spyware check, but no improvement.

I'm still waiting for my 64K SIM. The people a Vodacom posted it to me after they have promised that they will deliver

Thanks for the help!

Dont know if you've mentioned it somewhere, but what are your GPRS speeds? Have you tried using it instead [and is it also slower than normal or just 3G].

As for the 64k sim, im still on a 32k Sim and was getting 30 kBytes/sec downloads last night [was playing on earth.google.com streaming satelite images of SA...], so not so sure that will make such a huge diff unless your current sim is faulty.

Just did a GPRS test and I'm getting about 3.3 kBytes/sec. Not sure that it should be.

Until today I have not yet received my 64K SIM. (It has been now about 3 weeks)
Phoned 082-155 again, and they do not know what happened.

The lady suggested I must go to my nearest Vodashop.

I did get me 64K SIM after visiting 3 Vodacom Shops.

As expected it did not make a difference. (Getting about 3.5KB/sec)

A Vodacom Rep Phoned this morning, he is still asking very basic questions so it does not seem if they have a handle on this one, but he did say they will escalate to siemens premium support. This should have been done a week ago!!

So it has been 3 weeks now!!!

I have got the Vodafone 3G card working on my Mac Powerbook, it connects with optimal signal strength on 3G, however the Internet connectivity is very erratic & slow - particularly to secure sites - can't even log into Standard Bank Internet banking, Investec is very slow. Both sites are fine with ADSL. I got the DNS settings from 082155, but they don't seem to help. Any ideas?

Setup Questions

1- What card do you have?
2- Firmware on the card?
3- Dashboard version?

Location Questions

4- Area you're in? / 2G cell-id?

Performance Questions

5- Can you do a FTP from smtp.vodacom.co.za?
6- What throughput do you get?
7- What is your ping times like to smtp.vodacom.co.za?

It's really sucking today. I can't even ping smtp.vodacom.co.za!

Therein Lies the problem.....Slow Internet Access

I have been a Vodacom 3g user since its inception, and I can guarentee you that the service has indeed deteriorated since then. I am of course referring to internet access speeds. On day one, happy user, I can fondly remeber achieving download speeds in excess of 50kbs, and sustained. As the service has grown, and more users have joined, these speeds have reduced to now about 5-6kbs. I have complained about this, and have even logged calls. NO avail. It appears that Vodacom are running out of internet bandiwdth (the amount of bandwidth between vodacom and the internet via their ISP) The solution to this is obvious and simple. Vodacom need to buy more internet bandwidth with CIR on the international access. Then we will all see much improved download speeds. AND HEY VODACOM....Whats with the 64kb upload speed limit???? I was also promised (and beleived) that the service would be upgraded to 512kb or 1mb by July 2005. waiting, waiting, waiting. Point is, it wont make a difference if Vodacom dont buy more bandwidth.

UNHAPPY

The Internet bandwidth has been upgraded numerous times over the past few months and this process will carry on with a big hike shortly. If you drive past Midrand you might see a massive dish going up.....

Actually upgrading the internet and transmission network connections is the easy bit. The radio network is much more complex for all the various reasons discussed on this forum.

The upload speed is a function of the terminal devices, the network already supports uploads of 144Kb/s.

The 1Mb/s HSDPA (actually 2Mb/s) was announced earlier this year with tests running up to July. Once again the network is ready but no terminal devices are available yet. We expect them around Xmas.

A big hike? That sounds great. Any ideas more or less when - ish. Wont hold you to it I promise :-) p.s. I can ping smtp.vodacom.co.za and get average of 269ms, which is great. (internet access is still painfully slow) I only have 3 bars coverage at the moment, so I think biometrics has a different problem or his / her coverage is bad or running errors.
