Very slow torrent on Mweb

Hi there. I've subscribed to Mweb's uncapped 384kb/s and it got activated little under a week ago. The account that I have is not unshaped, and I know that for torrents that is not ideal, but it's all I could afford and I'm patient, I don't mind the slow speeds. So for the first couple of days my torrents download at about 20 - 40kb/s in total, slowing down during the day and speeding up by night as expected. Now yesterday all my torrents stopped downloading completely. Utorrent is connected but nothing uploads or downloads. The rest of the internet works fine.

I've read a couple of tips online and enabled protocol encryption which made the torrents run again, but only between 1 - 2kb/s. I'm not that patient. And after a while that also stopped and nothing wants to download any more. Now I want to know, is the reason for this a setting problem, is there a problem with the connection on mweb's side, or is it the throttling that interferes to the extent that I basically can't download torrents any more? Or anything else you guys could think of might be the problem, I would really appreciate the help.

I've seen a couple of post on here with guys having the same problems, but out of the replies I couldn't find anything that helped me. I'm not an expert when it comes to uTorrent, so if there is a few pointers anyone has that might help resolve this, please shout.

Best advice would be to move away from torrents completely. If you need to download some "stuff" then using news servers is a much better solution.
 
Wow, if my torrents was as fast as your reply I wouldn't have had the problem, thanks man. It really sucks about the torrents because it was really working fine for about 5 days, just all of the sudden it stopped. But thanks for the alternative. News servers? where should I look for it?

ZbigZ or Downstorm will fix your problem.

What router do you have? A 'el cheapo Telkom router? Try resetting the router for 10 seconds. News servers ain't free and on a 384kbps line my ZbigZ downloads always corrupts.
 
Some cheap ADSL modems/routers can't handle the amount of connections that torrents use.

Torrents are known to be shaped heavily, especially during office hours on Mweb shaped uncapped accounts.

I'd also recommend that you rather use news servers. With Mweb's news servers you'll get pretty decent speeds, and if you need more, then get a free XSusenet 1Mbps account.
If you still need more speed, or download uncached content, then get like an Astraweb or other paid news server account.

Just be careful to download too much content (like a few hundred GB per month) via SSL encrypted connections.
 
I would also assume that you have checked the torrents that you are downloading have seeders and peers etc and that your bit torrent client isn't complaining about firewalls or some such issues? I have torrents which just completely died - but that was because they were not seeded correctly / completely or there were no peers online.
 
There is currently some kind of problem with international connectivity via MWEB... maybe that is the cause of your problem.
I am also running torrents, they were fine until last night, pretty much the same time people started to post on this forum and complain about international being dead.

Have seen this before... and I know its an issue because not only torrents are affected, some overseas sites timing-out and preventing me from working :mad:
 
Thanks for everyone's replies, this is really helping. I have a VKom-router that I got as part of the deal with Mweb. I've reset it, but hasn't made any difference. I've also checked the firewall and seeding and everything seems to be in order.

Since I posted the thread my download speed did go up again to what it usually were, but that was only after 1am. It maintained that speed till the morning, but during the day all my torrents went down again and at the moment nothing is running and I can't get it to start. As I understood the throttling, it meant that during the day when a lot of people use their internet, torrents and similar downloads are put on a lower priority, slowing them down significantly. But is it supposed to shut it down all together? And until this late in the day?

I actually hope you are right about the international connectivity problem, Koosi, because that will mean that the problem will be temporary and not permanent. Like I said, I know that I have a slow connection for torrents, but I'm not in a rush and I don't have any problem with waiting, it's just that this is a bit ridiculous.

I've also downloaded BitTornado as an alternative to uTorrent, but the problem still persists so I doubt if the fault lies with the client. And I'm considering using the news servers. But this is where my noob-colours are shown, how do I access it? Like the mweb server that Pada suggested?

I'm downloading two torrents at the moment, does seem slower than usual. Was almost dead this afternoon, doing around 6kB/s at the moment.
 
Damn, at least you have something. I've reset the router again and restarted utorrent. It immediately starts downloading at a couple of kb/s per torrent, but then drops down to 0kb/s within a couple of seconds and then dead. Hopefully it's an external problem that's sorted out quickly and I hope your's picks up pace as well.
 
Ho3n3r, I'm pretty sure that I've limited my upload speed to around 20kb/s, but it never reaches that high anyway, I'll check to make sure when I'm back home from work.

Toilet_Duck, my torrents also started picking up again later last night and climbed to an decent but still slow speed after 12am. It's still nothing like I had a week ago. I'm pretty sure that when I get back from work today the all the torrents will be down again and will remain like that for the most of the night.

Hereticangel, I've heard a lot about news servers and usenet, but still don't know how to access it or exactly how it works. Most things I've googled explains what it is, not really how you use it. The reason I use torrents is because that's what I used the last time I had an internet connection a couple of years ago. I'm keen to learn more about alternatives. Do you know where I can go to read more specifically how to use news groups or usenet? A thread on this forum maybe? Still haven't found anything.
 
I had the same problem running at between 1 & 2kb's on a 1 meg line - I was assured that mweb don't shape (by the mweb guy) but really do think they have a problem on their side as this wasn't the case last week :erm: Would like to know more about news servers as well how they work ect ..
 
Have you checked that UPNP is working? Is your router forwarding traffic to your PC? Does the 'utorrent' setup guide succeed in reaching your random port?

Do you have the little green light at the bottom right? Or is it complaining that it can't do incoming connections?
 
GOod Morning Guys

Torrent speeds are never guaranteed and will fluctuate through the day and can even differ from day to day depending on the network load. I know the speeds have been excellent for the last few months, but please remember that this is a shaped product and torrent traffic has the lowest priority so you simply can't expect that experience to remain constant.

The good news is that we did add a little bandwidth onto the fire yesterday so there will hopefully be some improvement and we are expecting a substantial upgrade on the 1st of June.

For the torrenters I would however recommend that you don't speed watch - it is a shaped product and you should rather look at what you're downloading over the course of the month to determine if you're getting value for money, rather than how fast it's going right this minute.

I switched to MWEB from Telkom on the 1st of May, and my torrent downloads went from 60-90kb/s to 0.1 - 1kb/s. Regretting taking the 3 month contract (free router deal)... :(
