Hi,

Currently myself and somebody else login with same ADSL account. THe problem is for the last month and a half we have had uploads reaching 1.3 gigs a day. Neither of us can figure out how this is happening. At one stage he had bit torrent installed on his PC but it has since been removed and the problems continue.

Last month the total upload + download was over 25 gig

Does anyone know of a freeware network utility that I could download to monitor and possibly see where it is coming from. I have have an unsecured wireless network (if anyone can explain how to secure and still have XP PRO see it, I would be gratefull) with a billion router and have a sneeky suspiscion someones piggy backing it.

Any help is appreciated...

Check your DSL stats for multiple logons. If you are suspecting hacking, change your DSL password.

Check out netlimiter. It's awesome at monitoring each applications bandwidth usage. Also you really need to lock down you wifi. You should enable WPA with pre shared key on your router. You will need a service pack on XP to see the router with WPA, I think it may have been introduced in sp1 but I would load sp2 anyways if i was you. Once your pc has sp2 then it's a piece of cake to connect to the router using the wireless network connection screen and input your key that you setup on your router.

seems to me someone might be using your WiFi connection, my neighbour has left his connection open for everyone around to use, strange!

/doc.

Whenever I enable the wpa security, set the key, and use that same key with XP sp2 the wi-fi connection breaks and I have to reset all the settings on the router.

Having a look at the netlimiter now, maybe that will help me find the answer...

Weird. I've got no problems with my SP2 notebook and my access point using WPA.

Another way you could secure your access point is to allow only certain MAC addresses to connect to it. I secure mine via WPA and with MAC security.

It's better than nothing.

Your wireless card may not support WPA.
Try use 128 WEP instead see if that works. It might not be the best security wise, but it will deter most people. Lock you Wireless NIC's MAC addresses in to the router as well.
