Viability of using mobile broadband as backup for remote work

Is mobile broadband stable enough to be used as a backup for remote work? My primary internet is fibre, but wanted to have a backup internet connection in the event that my fibre connection is down. Was thinking about using Rain, but heard that some people have been experiencing problems. If so, what other options are suitable as a backup for remote work?

I've been using a Telkom Mobile Prepaid SIM. If I need the backup, I load 20GB of data on it using the SmartBroadband Wireless Prepaid tariff, which costs R249.

Prepaid sim in your phone or a Router. Phone with Hotspot if you don't have a Router.

Check if you get reception on Telkom. Cheapest bundles are Mo'nice: *123# Deals are individual to each sim.

If you don't have Telkom coverage, opt for MTN. RAIN and Voda are crap in 2021.
Early 2020 I would have suggested Voda, but they are horrid connection/speed wise.

Some folks like CellC.
I wouldn't bother with them. It's a half arsed outfit that functions on debt.

I've got Openserve fibre from Afrihost, but I also have an Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE account as well for just in case. Works perfectly fine on the odd occasion that the fibre goes down.

Just be aware that the tower(s) you are connected to may go down during load shedding.
I personally have been fortunate in last 2 places I've lived in that they have stayed active (MTN LTE connection), but others not so...

Best to ask around, your neighbours, etc

My employer has an APN via Vodacom, so I use that from time to time when I don't have a better connection available where I can use VPN.

Is Telkom viable these days, with (at one point or currently) the rapid changing of IP addresses in the space of seconds - for usage with work VPNS?
