Inside means the side facing the inside of the vehicle. If the tyre was inside out it would have no visible tread. But swapping left and right would not have fixed the directionality problem, though.
Yes, but if the inside side of the tyre was placed on the outside side of the rim the trye would be "inside-out"... Swapping left and right wouldn't miraculously fix that, and I struggle to see how anyone in their right mind would think "inside-out" meant entire tyre had been inverted with the tread facing the rim.
