Video calling conundrum

Juniper Research on Tuesday said that Apple's latest generation iPhone will spur adoption of video calls but the trend is stymied because different devices don't talk to one another.

I don't get this - Apple is the only one with it's own standard - Smasung, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and HTC are all using the standard 3G video calling system, so why is there fragmentation? Apple are the only ones not playing nice and there's nothing new there.

Its all about CONTROL = APPLE

If one could easily vidoe call from a PC to a cellphone using 3G video call technology, that would be great

Almost everything that Apple does is way better that the rest.

ROFL, Are you f0oken retarded or just fanboi much?

Better my ass, apple fail at putting the basic functions of cellphone on their so called "1337" cellphone.

Too expensive, standard calls are enough of a ripoff. Besides, isn't the quality of 3G video calls terrible?

You can probably do it cheaper using a data bundle or Wi-Fi, then use an app like Fring. But then both parties need Fring and their own data bundle or Wi-Fi.

Apple's Facetime is near useless because so few can use it, but they can install Fring on their devices too

That was possible until the morons at Skype blocked Fring.

The reasons video calling hasn't taken off go beyond technology. In fact demand would or should drive it forward. Nokia has had this feature for years, but people don't use it. Privacy/modesty maybe?

How often do you call someone from somewhere using your phone where it makes sense for them to see you?

Video calls seem to work from PCs etc, but not really from phones (especially not portable ones), it have been tried before and never really took off: ISDN video phones, 3G video phones
