Hi all

My video card seems to be overheating. My PC freezes everytime I play any game of mine and only when I play games. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do about keeping things cool?

Run Furmark to stress only your GPU. If it freezes during this, then ya its your GPU. If not, its something else. What you can try though is get a normal fan, open the side of your case, and let it blow air directly in. It will work until you get 1. a better case with better airflow 2. better gpu 3. aftermarket cooling for your GPU

1.open case put a desktop fan
2. get a new gpu cooler
3. clean pc of dust
4. eat a potato then midori meeoz

+1 to furmark

Thanks guys, I'll give furmark a run at home and see what results I get.

I already tried the fan idea and games ran fine while it was blowing into my case. But I have no space for it to be there permanently. My video card is a MSI 7900GTX and the fan seems to be running slower than I think it should be so perhaps I need to get myself a new card. Was thinking of getting a 9800GTX (don't have cash to go all out).

Get rivatuner and turn up the fan to 100% see if that helps.

I know my 9800gx2 was getting to over 100 at 25% on a 100% it does not touch 85.

I had the same problem after I installed my 275GTX, I thought it was heat so replaced the case and put fans everywhere.

Same problem, replaced Graphics card no luck.

The machine only froze during games, some games would run for 30 minutes upwards others would crash as the game loaded.

I ran furmark and the pc crashed, everyone kept saying it was the GPU.

Turned out to be the Power supply, the 600W omega was not coping very well so replaced it with a corsair HX750W and no problems since.

Make sure that there is enough power getting to the fan.

I just replaced my GPU fan for about R170, was worth it. The old one got grimed up and would get stuck.

I have a Cooler Master Extreme 550W PS. Perhaps that's the prob. I'll have to see if Furmark freezes tonight.

I don't think it'll be worthwhile to get an aftermarket fan for a 7 series card. I have no doubt it's overheating, the 7900's weren't very well designed for thermal output. It may be time to put it to pasture. In any event there will be games now that you can't really play well on it surely.

I've been playing Dragon Age - Origins without much hassle on high graphic settings. While playing I'd get some unusual colour splashes every so often and the odd screen tearing and now it just wont work :( So I guess it's probably time for a new video card.

So I did the Furmark stress test on my PC last night. My GPU temp rose to a max of 69 degrees (kinky :p). It didn't freeze at all so I decided to try out Dragon Age and the strangest thing happened.

I loaded my last saved game and managed to walk a few steps before the game froze (no surprise there). But then after about 10 secs the environment started rebuilding itself. Then a few seconds after that the characters started rebuilding. Once that was all done I was able to play for a split second before the whole process started again.

I was about to reset at this point but decided to see if it would continue doing this. To my surprise it stopped and I was able to play. But what started happening was the game would speed up and slow down to normal speed every second. I then thought my video card was officially screwed.

I restarted my PC and have been playing Dragon Age since without any screen tearing or colour splashes occuring since. I'll be testing things out over the next few days. It's as if the "drain has been unclogged".

P.S. my fan speed has been set at 85% for several months. I'll test it at 100% and see what results I get.

So after several days of monitoring my situation, there's been no improvement. I ran a stress test on Furmark several times and my max temp was always 70 degrees celsius which seems a bit high.

70c isn't bad. If it's artifacting at those temps I'd suggest the hardware is actually damaged.

Stop playing games?

I have the 7900 GTO and only 450W PSU so powert could not possibly be the problem, admittedly I have had to replace my cooler with a aftermarket job (I now have a Zalman coller on it, old albeit but it works like a dream), If the fan actually helped then odds are the card is not permanently damaged but it might be the Memory on the card overheating... Cant think of anything other than better airflow to resolve this, unless the memory chips on you card would allow simple replacement of the heat sinks on the memory...

Trouble is if the card over heats and you do not notice it, it can damage the card and from there you are screwed.
