video format to play

You can pick up dvd players with xvid/divx support for dirt cheap, most probably the least hassle.

Robert! this guy is correct... this is actually your best bet. Converting videos to DVD is a time consuming process and can be frustrating.

Rather just go out and buy a cheap media player device that supports xvid/divx and you will be much happier (and so will the wife!).

Will try the programs tonight.
I meant fiddle with nero, which is version 7.

I have not tried Nero, but good luck. I tried many other "professional" converters and none worked as well as the one I linked to.
Yes it's time consuming for the PC but to initiate such a conversion is a drag, drop and click experience, then out comes a well coded and formatted DVD. I do have to say that keep in mind I only download good BluRay quality movies greater than a few GB's.

I agree that setting up a decent media player connected to a PC running a media server is the best way in the long term cutting out the schlep. Using "PS3 media server" as media streamer on the PC streams to practically any device, works a great treat. I use mine via my PS3 and had little issues until something in Win7 I updated recently broke my application.
