Video game graphics that blew us away

I was drooling over half-life 2 the first time I played it.

Was about to come here and mention MGS2 and it was at the top of the list :D This was the first game that legitimately made me go "wow" throughout the entire game. One of the things that stood out was that it ran @ 60fps as well, which was rare for these type of console games back then. I was very young and didn't quite understand framerate, all I knew was it felt incredible.

A few other games that comes to mind:

Half-Life 2, specifically those trailers they showed.
Far Cry
Gears of War
Crysis

I think a better condition would be a game that blow your mind with graphics before 2005 (xbox, ps3)

Gawking at the graphics for the first time.

My selection would be: Sonic 3, FFX (PS2)

Games that suprised me how well they looked even when they were released later were: Shadow of colosus, this game managed to look crazy big and sucked you in, and it played on the PS2, and ofc FF12, dem particle effects are crazy, especially the summons (espers)

Lots of games that looked very good came from the PS2, amazing piece of hardware.

As a side note, I thought Sacrifice was above everything else at the time, wierd design and all.

I was in awe when I saw the trailer of the first one where there was a killer whale in background.
Yip... when I saw that, I pulled out my Nedbank credit card and bought the game, and console, online, and waited, with bated breath for the machine and game, to come from the USA.
I still have it:

first time I switched on my ps3 and played uncharted. I almost jizzed.

The first Mario on N64, that was epic.

Far Cry
Grand Prix 3 (GP3)

more recently Titan Fall

To give some perspective.
When I grew up I wanted a Sega Genesis. My apartheid parents said "Nooooooo you are too old for that"
When I started working, I got, very late, into the game- no pun intended.
The first game I ever played was Sonic Adventure, and to this day, it has huge sentimental value, because not did it only blow my mind, it made me become a serious fan of the blue hedgehog, who, in turn, led me to discover anime, and other games.

For me ... the first game with great physics was Prince of Persia.

After Police Quest I and Space Quest I and King's Quest I this was AWESOME!

Here are some of the screenshots I made:

I always thought that Police Quest 4 had nice graphics way back when.

More recently though, I think that Red Dead Redemption's graphics is quite nice.
I remember when playing the game, I would just stand on a cliff and stare out over the horizon for minutes at end.

The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind

I still need to play this but will be using HD texture packs etc.

I briefly play the first Elder Scrolls. I skipped Morrowind because my life steered me clear of computers back then.

Then it plunged me head first into PC gaming again with Oblivion being one of the droplets.

I've been submerged ever since.

Although I'm gasping for real air again upon the latest installment of The Elder Scrolls.

Games are too "new".

For me the most stunning games as first experienced for me were:

Unreal

BattleZone ( the late 90's version )

Heavy Metal Fakk2

Unreal was so green like Quake was so brown.

For me, when I got my 4mb 3Dfx card and fired up Quake 2, just wow. The world changed that day.
