Video games improve decision making

I wont say I'm surprised - its just that the title is again misleading (which is typical from MyBB articles).

Firstly they're talking about action games vs slow paced strategy games (not video games in general)
Secondly action games make faster decisions with same level of accuracy (not improved decision making)
and Thirdly - the research was entirely based on visual/auditory information to base decisions on (useful for decision making when you're driving and so on) - but doesnt mean it will improve e.g. business decision making, etc

Change title to: Action video gamers make faster decisions [...related to actions]

Definitely, I have been playing Starcraft 2 for a month or so now and i find myself thinking of the best build order to make my breakfast in the morning.
Also helps with mulitasking and time management at work.
And I'm pretty sure playing Gran Turismo helped me pass my driving test back in the day.

Play lotsa Quake Live and you gotta constantly think about where your next rocket has got to land while the idiot keeps jumping all over the place shooting lightning in your face and then you immediately notice two other forms of ammunition fly past your head which makes you perform a super fast combination of rocket jump escapes while strafing to avoid the barrage of long distance railguns and whipping out yours to shoot back at the now pixel sized enemies before you dive around a corner and await the next onslaught...all in the space of like a second and a half lol :D

Improve decision making.....

Should I kill the hooker and get my money back, or just steal another car and salvage it?

I knew it ... always knew that gaming was good for something.

Time for me to give Civilization ... on second thoughts, it could help me with my plans for world domination. So I think that one stays ;)

Improved decision making...

Snipe 'em from 500 yards or rush in with both M16's blazing?

*sigh* sadly still too many choices :(

Video games also teach us the the most expensive item is stronger and better then anything thats slightly cheaper :P

No wonder Apple turned a profit!

blegh.... COD2 and sims 2... what was this done 5 years ago?

and the sims is really boring, the players were probably almost asleep.

I think single player games would probably have little to no effect on real world decision making because the decisions you make have no consequences, if you mess up you can just reload a save and carry on like nothing happened.
Multiplayer games on the other hand don't have this, if you mess up you can't take it back and thats probably why they noticed more of a decision making change with MW players over sims players.

They should do more tests on whether driving sims improve driving skills and if shooters improve soldiers skills...etc
....and if GTA improves criminals skills :)

Poor example, read some of the other articles where they show how seriously people take games.
I think if anything some gamers take their decisions in game more seriously then RL ones.

Yes I always knew gaming makes you awesome! And I alway knew playing the Sims makes you dumber (hold on I got to go pee my bladder bars nearly full.... .... Ok I am back.)
The researchers found that video game players develop a heightened sensitivity to what is going on around them, and this benefit doesn't just make them better at playing video games, but improves a wide variety of general skills that can help with everyday activities like multitasking, driving, reading small print, keeping track of friends in a crowd, and navigating around town.
So I figure these are the following games you need to play to improve those listed skills -
Multitasking- Starcraft and other Strategy Games
Driving - Dirt 2 (for cornering and dirt racing), NFS for high proformance vehicle training, GTA for improving your traffic avoidance and getaway driving practice,Mafia is you want to learn to drive within the speed limit.
Reading the Small Print - RPG games like Oblivion,Morrowind,WOW where you really need to read your mission or you going get lost for days trying to figure out where or what you got to do.
Keeping Track of Friends in the Crowd - I guess FPS esp Co-op and Multiplayer games are good for this. You don't want to be that annoying TK guy. Counter Strike,COD,etc although Hitman and Splinter Cell are also probably good as long as you don't use your awsome sneaking powers to stalk the girl next door or garrote her boyfriend in the alleyway.
Navigating around town - Well Most mission related games espcially if the time oriented for this I'ld recomend Assassins Creed,Just Cause 2,Far Cry 2,Prototype and that free running games that I can't remeber which made me sick when I tried playing it.

So what games do you think would help you -

Help you regulate the current global financial worries.
Deveolp clean renewable energy.
Coordinate large hostile business takeovers.
Help me survive the coming Zombie Invasion

hmm... EVE...

If I make enough ISK in a Month, I can buy a 30 day PLEX which means I never again have to pay for my monthly Subscription.

i guess GTA games improved my skills somehow... heres a story .... my friends left me at a lan once but i got alternative transportation back home . Upon my dark arrival i took my bmx and went to the "main oke's" house and his gf's house and i wasted their houses with 2 dozen eggs and condoms. Hitting anything from clothes lines to pot plants , to front doors , garage doors... I was never the fighting / revenge type ever in my life.

ah sweet revenge :twisted: and man did it feel good. To top it all off they had no idea... shows you gamers have the edge over normal people. I would have instantly guessed " it could be that we left our friend at gateway while he stays all the way back in pinetown !? "

they were "swak" friends to start with so after school, i just ditched them as fast as i could. I then made new friends online via the DF clan and Crysiswars and cod4 . It really is a small world :D

Most people in durban drive likes its need for speed carbon = no care at all , its awesome , just speed , no indicators , no worries bru ! the car wont be affected at all man. ITS FINE TO DRIVE 120 IN A 60 zone

Just got back from Durban last night yeah driving thier is real chilled if you want to go slow you go slow or just zoom all over. This one time mess with a mate we took a little milk and egg white
put it in a condom to give it that genuine used look and then stuck it in a pocket in the back of his car for his girlfriend to find.He found it first so he thought his chick was cheating on him in his own car man that was funny as hell, but when he came to tell us we just couldn't keep from laughing so he knew some thing was up.

Tonight I am going to play H.A.W.K.S to improve my agility at supersonic speeds. Also put my NFS skills to use on the drive back from Durbs last night too.

Yes I can see how being able to save/load and make decisions without consequence improves decision making lol. Kinda how practising stabbing yourself in the eye improves your hand/eye coordination.

I didn't know you can do that in an online multiplayer game...
