So all the advertising and hype, just how does this work? I can't see any settings on the phone to be able to do this. You cannot send a video attachment via SMS. Must the phone be upgraded or what?

Hi,

You need an MMS capable phone that can play videos. I think most nokia camera phone that can take videos are. I'm not sure about the others. Also I dont think MMS is on by default, but I managed to turn mine on by going to vodacom4me and send myself an MMS picture message. After that I just take a video with my phone and then choose send as multimedia message, give it a recipient number and then send. Costs me 80c, videos came out ok.

Hope that helps

Video SMS is really just a marketing term for MMS. A lot of people don't know about MMS and the decision was made to rather call it video SMS, especially because it's at the same price.

You must first ensure your phone is set up for MMS. Then take a video clip and send it via multimedia (MMS).

*sigh* I so need a new phone. I reckon it's time to start a thread and ask for suggestions :D My poor motorola is not capable of all these bells and whistles. Then again, it's not really capable of anything anymore :)

MMS is the way forward :D It's kinda nifty

Hmmm, I've been using MMS for ever - so Video SMS is just MMS but at cheaper rates. OK, got it!

Actually quite a clever ploy. Everyone know SMS but not so many MMS.

So going from SMS -> Video SMS -> MMS will hopefully educate more people to the uses of MMS.

Ok, but now my question: When I send a MMS (which is a Video SMS), it opens up a 3G or GPRS connection. where does the 80c come into play now? Does the system pick up it is a video, and only charge 80c, or am I charged 3G/GPRS rates?

I are confused:confused:

well, remember that you have separate settings for (gprs) internet and mms. so there's probably also a separate billing structure when sending data using the mms apn, vs sending using the internet apn.

i'm gonna guess that anything up to 300kb will be charged at 80c, irrespective of the contents.
but that's just a guess... :)

Jarr, I think you nailed it.

You pay a fixed rate for the MMS (I think there is a video lenght limit, say 30s) and as it goes through the MMS APN it can be picked up as 'non-gprs/3G' data.

So previously you would have payed say R2/Mb, now you pay 80c for the complete MMS.
