Video streaming services biting at DStv's business

South Africa’s biggest pay-TV broadcaster MultiChoice is being pressed into a corner.

The rapid expansion of international and local online video streaming services threatens its once sought-after DStv Premium satellite package.

Over the last few years, DStv has seen a gradual decline in customers on its high-end Premium product.

I subscribed to F1 TV for Formula 1 streaming and switched between DSTV now and F1 TV. The quality of DSTV streaming is shocking compared to F1TV. F1TV also had so much more to offer for a fraction of the price.
Is F1TV 30 seconds behind DSTV though?

I know what will help. Limit streams on their streaming service to just one user! Oh wait...

If it is, I couldn't care less. F1 TV is $5 pm, in 1080p, has multiple commentary options (incl. the main Sky Sports one), and live cockpit views for every driver. And allows simultaneous streams to get driver cams set up alongside the main feed. And access to just about every prior F1 race, race analysis, some documentaries and zero ad breaks. Nirvana for F1 fans.

Ah yes, F1TV has so much sport to offer. Such as, Formula 1. And... more Formula 1.

DSTV has so little, just F1, F2, MotoGP, SBK, Formula E, WEC, Kyalami 9 Hour.
And of course rugby, football, basketball, tennis, golf, cricket, cycling, American football, baseball, EFC, athletics, WWE, the Olympics, etc.

Look I'm all for criticizing DSTV for running a monopoly, charging whatever they feel like and not keeping up with the times but they do offer a ton of stuff.

Why pay so much for DStv if all you watch is F1? Now, stay with me here...it's going to save money, and then you have something focused on F1. *tada!*

It's a matter of time before others cotton on (witness Amazon fighting for IPL rights, and that, I am sure will only be the start!). Then we can pick and choose what sports we want to stream, and when, and not rely on a company STILL trying to introduce its streaming service (which, ironically, we use to stream IPL...so they have it, but they're too thick to realise it).

The DSTV package is nice. That isn’t the issue.

Can they give you all those sports for say R299 a month?

I said this before, DStv is going nowhere anytime soon as long as they have Supersport.

A streaming service per sport. Um no thanks.

Will keep my supersport thanks
