Vintage Computers

Thanks for the link, another rabbit hole to dive into... :)
It is, right? :)

All the hobbyist electronic magazines, I grew up with, are on here and it's a nostalgia-fest of note reading them all again. Crazy that when you see the cover you remember all the content of that issue. :)

I've actually built a few projects from these magazines that I could not afford when they were published, like the Elektor Junior Computer (1980) and the ETI Triton Computer (1978). Got a few more on the wish-list. :)

My DIL uses this computer weekly for his "business", Windows 3.0, As Easy, and dot matrix printer.

I pointed to the CD drive and asked him what it does.

"they put a cup holder in as well".

I would like to backup his documents somehow to a modern device such as a flashdrive or something.
How would one do this without out taking out the HDD. I am so scared something gets damaged.

There is a CD drive by the looks of it, but he doesn't know how it works or access it or anything. I guess that would just be a reader and not a writer and reader.

You will also note that my PC has never had a CD/DVD drive so haven't used one in more than 15 years either.,

I suppose it still uses IDE:

5V SD Card module To IDE3.5 40 Pin Disk Drive Adapter Board Riser Card Capacity Supports Up To 128GB SDXD Card 1309 Chip ATA IDE

Not sure if I have thought it all through though.

What size is the HDD? Presuming its running DOS so not sure you have many options. There are adapters like IDE to SD Card but will probably need Windows drivers.

Not sure if there are many DOS based programs to allow you to write to CD? (If you can find a CD writer)

You might be able to connect up something like a laplink cable to another PC but then that PC will also need a parallel port.

Well it says Windows 3.1

Ah yes - missed that :) Get a old CD writer and see if you can find drivers.

Would be interesting to get a image of the HDD and see if it works through virtual box.

Really dumb question. One can't put something on a CD if the drive doesn't have writing capabilities or something specific?

/hangs head in shame
Before CD Read/Write you had CD Read Only drives, you will have to check if it is the older read only drive.

If not you may still find an IDE CDE Writer somewhere as @gregmcc suggested.

Also read up on gotek floppy emulators. This allows you to connect to a USB drive via some hardware and it emulates a floppy.

Not sure about Win 3.1 but they have emulation working for all sorts of hardware.

Apparently this IDE-SD board does not need a driver:

3. The SD socket supports up to 128GB SDXD cards.

Connect the power supply and the IDE cable. After the SD card is inserted into the SD socket, the conversion board is equivalent to an electronic hard disk, and no driver is required. After installing the operating system, you can boot the operating system (such as windows98, etc.) via the SD memory card.

Still do your homework if going this route because there are often unexpected "surprises". Also make sure there is an available Molex power cable available should there be nothing that you can unplug to power it.
