Vintage Computers

Glad you're all sorted @My_King its been a journey... Felt like a DOS point and click adventure game vicariously lived through you :D
I'm just a bit pissed on money wasted.
Like card 3. Supplier states game port.

"Show me where the gameport hurt you exists"

Or the other one where the gameport does not even have grounding on the port.
why even include that if not connected.
****ing superglue it, it will be cheaper than putting a fake Gameport. Never had this issue before.

All being said, I am glad to have a good P4 up and running. Not a bad built for Win98SE and WinXP, hybrid system. Also glad having original discs for Windows.

Maybe just get an AGP jraphics card then be done. Maybe.

Was also interesting to see Win98 on SSD.
Guess I need a TV licence now. TV card is also working.

Thankful for the people here who assisted.
Last weekend, went to some second hand shops in search and could not find what I was looking for.

Creative Labs SB Live is worth it in the end, I think.

I am back at it my fellow cabineeet membas.

Looking for a gpu. An AGP 4x card that supports win 98 SE.

Built in 64MB shared Intel one is not cutting it.

Most people sold their good stuff to upgrade to better stuff.

Still, it’s a good idea to say what you want it for. Some chipsets are better at some things than others.

I mean my first 3D accelerator was a 3D Blaster (Rendition Verité). Very limited support, but AGP. I moved from that to a Diamond Monster 3D (Voodoo 1 PCI).

You’re threading the needle.

Have you tried the Rudolph Loew's memory patch for windows 98?

There is a complete unofficial service pack for windows 98 that includes this patch.
Managed to max out my RAM to 1GB.

The problem is the 64MB shared GPU.

I'm looking for an AGP 4x GPU.

Black Hawk down is not performing.
Need for Speed Underground 2 is also sluggish.

May I ask why are trying to play much newer games released a couple years after XP on win98?

I want to max out what the Win 98 OS disk can do.

I have a Win XP SSD drive in there.

If I switch between operating systems, I don't want to unplug the GPU and plug it back in. Hence the Win 98 support.

But all this does not matter.

Looking for a GPU, the one of the AGP 4x kind.

This is going to be tricky to achieve due to the scarcity of GPUs locally, can try tracking down a cheap FX series or similar (if you are lucky, you'll stumble across an AGP 6600GT - I'd love to get my hands on one of these without needing to buy from ebay).

Biggest issue you're going to face is game/driver compatibility when trying to tick both the win98 and winXP boxes, in my experience certain older games won't run properly on the newer drivers that support a more modern GPU that is a good fit for XP era gaming as well. I ended up expanding my collection to have a dedicated machine for each broad era of game I wanted to play in order to combat the finnicky back and forth. I have also resorted to cloned windows installs that allow me to hotswap driver versions by changing the CF cards...

**edit - just realised that AGP 4x is going to limit you quite considerably as I believe most FX and Geforce 6 cards are only 8x. Might get lucky and find a 4x variant floating around somewhere.

Yeah, I hear you.

Of course I can install it on my current gaming PC.

Just hoping to finish my build on Win 98.

One day people will probably run out of usable hardware. I stopped collecting old hardware about a decade ago and have given away plenty, but I remember just over a year ago when they stopped producing the Z80 CPU (used in the ZX Spectrum and other micros) and I felt kinda sad and wondering if the only way forward is going to be emulation to keep the history alive.

Z80 CPU's don't die without a huge fight. There will still be gazillions available on the second hand market for many years to come.

Mantech even have brand new PIOs.

Latest acquisition.

Awesome find!! :D Let us know how you get on with the recap and hopefully returning this old girl to her former glory.

It always amazes me how far computing has come and yet how similar it still is to the early age... I was born in the 90s so cassette tapes were only used for music until I was exposed to it as a storage medium for old computers, then I discovered the punched paper based storage/program input and that blew my mind!
