"They shot at police, a school in the area and a councillor's house with live ammunition," Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.

She said police fired rubber bullets in return. "Nobody was injured [in the shooting]."

Disgruntled residents took to Klipspruit Valley Road outside the township shortly after midnight.

"They protested violently until 3am," she said.

Three electricity meters were also burnt.

Two occupants of a Toyota Corolla were also pelted with stones.

"They were slightly injured," she said.

About 500 residents began protesting over housing and water grievances on Monday.

Twenty people were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property. There were also reports of an 11-year-old boy being shot in the face by rubber bullets.

Mogale could not confirm that he was shot, but said that he was taken to hospital. A police officer was also injured by stone throwing on Monday.

He was hit in the leg with a rock, and suffered a sprain, she said.

"The situation is calm at this stage [on Tuesday morning] and a heavy police presence will remain in the area." Johannesburg Metro Police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that Klipspruit Valley Road would be closed on Tuesday. "Motorists should use the Golden Highway or Nirvana Drive as alternate routes, as there were still rocks and tyres on the road," he said.

We were going to visit family last night and got caught up in this. At around 7 on Nirvana road, my car was stormed and stoned. Substantial damage but luckily nobody was hurt.

It's difficult to feel any sympathy for these people. Later last night I recalled the incident and remember myself dodging people trying to get out of the mob. I wondered why I didn't just drive through/over them and that's when I realised the difference between myself and those who seemed to have the intent of killing myself and my wife.

Having said that, 15 hours after this incident, I do feel sympathy for the innocent who get hurt and for those whose plight of poverty is overshadowed by opportunistic criminals.
 
Electricity and squatter camps is a recipe for disaster IMO
 
Arrest the lot of them. There's nothing wrong with protesting, but do it in a civil manner FFS.
 
I grew up in Lenasia.Glad I'm out of there.

Got what they voted for so I don't see why they complaining.

Last night on enews they showed a 11yo boy who's face was bloodied. His mother claimed that the police shot him in the face with a rubber bullet but I have problems believing the mother but either way I feel for the boy

Indeed, they're part of ward 79800008 which was won by the ANC. Ward 79800009, which makes up most of Lenasia, was won by the DA.

Regardless of who they voted for, and whether they keep voting for the same party, I have no problem with peaceful protests. I do have a problem when it turns violent and they start acting like hooligans by stoning innocent people. So I've got no sympathy for these thugs, and I couldn't care less if they have no electricity and water for the rest of their lives.

The rioters should be locked up just for protesting at a school where children could get hurt.

They only want to hear from Zuma or Malema? God these people really don't have a clue do they? Malema can do sweet fsck all for them, but it seems like he will indeed be president one day if this is what these idiots are demanding.

Turbo, sorry to hear you guys were caught up in this mess. I would have ploughed through anyone who was trying to harm me and/or my family.

The police weren't the bad guys in this incident. If they had a peaceful protest no rubber bullets would have been needed in the first place.
 
Children shouldn't be allowed to protest along with the adults, if so the community should be responsible for anything that happens to the children.

The squatters are thieves who stole the land they're squatting on and now, like armed robbers, are demanding free services.

The ANC culture of "never struggled to be poor" is very infectious.

That's very cute but these are thousands of people who make almost no money, have no hope in hell to better themselves and they constantly see other people drive around in expensive cars and live in actual houses. They where promised that they'll have basic services too when the ANC took over but of course the ANC just stole tax money and sold tenders. And now they're angry and they'll start acting on that anger. How do we solve it?
 
Almost whats is quite strange is that the DA won the municipal elections for the first time ever in Lenasia recently.

Previously the ANC was there and they made promises, wonder what stirred up the masses :whistle:

Firstly, punish those who think they can act on their anger without repercussions.

The masses need education and, deeper than that, they need to want to be educated. I've seen too many young black students thowing away the opportunities they get.
