The Presidency's VIP protection unit confiscated the SABC crew's material during a scuffle on the N12 east of Johannesburg.

Negotiations were still under way for the release of the footage seized by the protection unit after an accident involving President Kgalema Motlanthe's motorcade before the Benoni-Atlas offramp.

"The arrested driver will be charged with negligent driving and attempting to flee the scene of an accident. Blood samples were taken and a charge of drunken driving might also be added," said De Beer.

The poor guy! They rammed his Golf and then opened fire on him, all for driving to close the BLC. I sure as hell would've attempted to flee in fear of my life.

It has taken bungling, lies and so much time to prosecute Judge Motata, but this guy is behind bars, had blood samples taken already and is charged.

Apparently some animals are more equal than others in SA.

Since you havent offered any links do you mind sharing how you know his vehicle was forced off the road and that he was shot at?

Did they have to ask him to give a coherent sentence? I'm sure he used the phrase "grass roots level" somewhere in his preamble :D

Maybe the driver was p!ssed, I doubt it though with the track record of the BLCs.

Wonder what was so urgent after a funeral for 'el presidente?

My bad, sorry.

Fixed.
Thanks.

The confiscation of the footage aside they very well may have done the right thing.

This is the Head of State and as such its their job is to protect him. I can see the the secret service in the US - or any other nation for that matter reacting in a similar manner.

Perhaps my use of the US president as an example was a poor one - his security is so tight that entire highways get shut down while he travels - you should see the havoc in NY when he visits the UN.

However if someone did get close enough to cause him harm I doubt there would be much hesitation.

Yeah, the US president does not have to deal with pesky things like traffic when he is out and about. :D

Though in all fairness, would you have hung around if someone opened fire on your car? It is a public highway and this guy may have had no idea that it was a top politicians BLC. In SA, if someone shoots at you you get away as quickly as possible!

They came after the accident. They were called to the scene and then the fun started, must be apartheid's fault.

Marine you have a serious chip on your shoulder man.

This guy is lucky not to be dead, they reacted perfectly fine i think, he drives into them and you guys exect them not to think they are under attack? Lets say this was the American president, this oke would be dead for sure.

I don't see the problem with this.

From what I can make out in the article, he got too close and the BLC reacted by driving into him!

Was the man shot driving too close to the president’s car drunk?
Tshepo Lesole | 46 Minutes Ago

A hospital in Benoni on the East Rand had cast doubt on claims by the police’s VIP Protection Unit that a man who was shot allegedly for driving too close to President Kgalema Motlanthe’s car was drunk at the time.

The man was driving on the N12 highway on Saturday when he crashed into a protection car in the president’s motorcade.

VIP officers allegedly shot the man, they claimed was drunk and posed a threat to the president, in the arm before assaulting him.

Management at the Glynnwood Hospital confirmed that the 25-year-old motorist had a gun shot wound to his right arm when he was admitted.

The police denied allegations that the man was also assaulted after the accident.

The hospital said although the man was not tested for alcohol his breath and behaviour did not suggest he was intoxicated adding that it could not confirm if he was drunk.

The man was taken to a government hospital and would be charged as soon as he recovered.

Interesting - who released the fact that he was drunk ?

Hmmm... very suspicious. Why was the SABC footage confiscated? What happened to freedom of the press? There is definitely something being hidden here. And this quote:

National police spokesperson Director Sally de Beer said the vehicle had driven too close to the president's vehicle. "The lead car from the motorcade intercepted the vehicle and a shot was fired. The suspect attempted to flee but was stopped and arrested."

This seems to indicate that the motorcade car crashed into him (on purpose), not the other way around.

Furthermore, rumours are flying about him being drunk without any proof. This may be a cover for shooting and assaulting an innocent driver.

Sounds like a cover up to me.

Sally De Beer, singing whatever tune her masters wish.
Reminds me a bit of Lulu Letlape.
