Virgin Active Once off Initiation Fee

I asked this in another thread if it was worth paying for vitality if one had to pay a stupid crazy gym activation fee over and above vitality fees at va and planet fitness
It looks like it's maybe cheaper to get an off Peak single club VA membership without the vitality hassle now even though comprehensive discovery cover has gone over R5500 pm for family coverage now.

You can easily make up the cost of the Vitality membership with the Healthy Food, Healthy Gear and Healthy Care benefits. You don't need a Discovery credit card to access those.

Enjoy the tog bag because you ll be paying for it for the obligatory 3 month no cover period if you switched out of medical aid providers
I see multiply only offers 25% off Virgin fees or planet fitness in premier their most expensive level
Actually there's no exclusion period. Moved to a closed medical aid group!

This fee, Is it once-off or every time you renew your contract with VA? I spoke to two different people at Discovery today - and got different answers.

It's once off. You don't have to keep renewing these contracts.
So if I had vitality with VA 3 years ago and stopped due to relocation now wanting to reactivate I do or don't have to pay
R1725 plus card fee plus monthly vitality fees? Or do I pay just vitality fee plus card fee for VA - no activation fee.?
Bit confused here

As far as I know, you will have to pay the activation fee again. diapason I think was referring to the instance where your membership continues year on year. But you never know, give VA a call and see what they say.

Correct. Hosehead terminated his original contract. The contract could have been transferred to a gym in his new location for a small fee.

I cant comment on the Discovery joining fee, but I know they have specials waiving the joining fee from time to time (for general members)

I also know that Momentum had a special a while back waiving their joining fee for their reward program.

I wanted to start gymming again, but rather join Planet Fitness as Virgin(wife is currently a member there) is overcrowded, and they wanted to charge us R1450 per person - R2 900 in total.

When asked why I need to pay this fee, Vitality said it's to deter people from stopping to go to gym. When I said but my wife is already at a gym so why should I pay that fee for her as well just to move, they couldn't give me an answer.

I moved from Vitality to Liberty... had to pay the activation fee again... Liberty then cancelled their loyality program within a year of me joining... moved back to Vitality - had to pay the activation fee AGAIN. So paid three times in a matter of years. (for two people).

Its a money making scam.

DING DING DING! And we have a winner!

I expect that a lot of people are turned away at anything over R1000. So it's a money making sham, but you are shooting yourself in the foot.

man aint that the facts. when i went to gym in 2012 it was always so quiet, maybe 10 people in the weights section. Obviously at 5-6 it was full.

Nowadays there's people in the gym all the time, I pull up at 4:30 am and there's already 30+ cars in the parking lot wtf. by the time i leave there's about double that

Because Virgin has not kept up in many areas and there is hardly any proper consistent long standing non folding competition forcing them to expand aggressively or more importantly upgrade and refurbish existing facilities also population in the Cape has skyrocketed .
Other metros are still waiting for long awaited refurbishment.
