I just want to rant about their crappy network. For last week my internet connection has been more off than on. Plus, yesterday and last night I had no signal at all. Could not even receive/send phone calls/sms's. It only started working this morning again. WTF! My gf was robbed last night and tried to call me throughout the night...she didn't even sleep a bit. I was the only one that she could call as they took her phone and she didn't know any other numbers off. This was a serious emergency and I was unreachable because of the poor network. Not impressed at all...

I have been experiencing similar problems for the last week (in Stellenbosch). This is not the first time either. I am switching to Cell C as soon as my contract expires.

Careful not to go from "k@k boompie" to "stront boompie" :)

I already have a Cell C SIM which I use in a 3G modem. It's slow from time to time, but at least the network never seems to disappear completely.

You are aware Virgin is using CellC's network?

I hate to break it to you but all the mobile networks are crappy. They spend too much money taking each other on about adds and stuff and can't even get their networks to run properly.

From my experience, I abuse each network for what it's worth (I have all the network's SIMs):
Vodacom: Good coverage, good service, expensive at times, they show no mercy
MTN: Cheaper than most, especially for night owls, who get 99-100% off between midnight and 3am.
Virgin: Free 50 SMS per R50 recharge. Best daytime rates for people talking for more than 5 minutes for that day
CellC: Best Data

Only true for pre-paid. Completely different when you look at contracts.

The network is crap. Data does not work at all for me during peak hours. 12pm to 2pm and 4:30pm to 8pm. In order to connect for a bit during these times I need to search for the network. Then it may work for a few minutes before I get the connection errors again. 18 months to go till contract ends....

Feel for you. At this stage the amount of crap vs. cheaper cost scale is so far out of balance that it is time to find another provider. They do not have a channel for dealing with customer complaints and the individuals in customer care/technical support most effective way of dealing with problems is to ignore them as nobody takes responsibility for anything.

Has the Virgin data network and coverage always been this bad? I've been with them since February and the data connections are regularly dropped - I assume it's because they're on the CellC network? My MTN number always has data connection.

Yes and no. Until early this year it was bad, then they switched on 3G and it was good, then the service deteriorated again and now its bad

I use a CellC speedstick and the connection hardly ever drops. When it does I can immediately connect again. So I've never been stuck without internet via CellC. Don't ever compare a Virgin Mobile connection to a CellC one. Although they say they're using the CellC network the difference is night and day. I get no connection during peak hours at all. They're giving CellC a bad name as people on Virgin Mobile think that they will get the same crap connection with CellC. No wonder CellC is going the Red Bull Mobile route.

I have terrible connectivity with Virgin in JHB central, I would highly recommend anybody switching to Virgin Mobile. Some days I wont get calls even when my reception is full and the person is calling me from the same office.
