Virgin Mobile

Nothing really, rumour has it that they are planning to compete on "service" rather than price.

Whats new for SA. :(

Sounds like it must be imminent then - in a perverse/reverse kinda way :D.

Was thinking the same when an alleged Virgin employee told me that, also they are planning to target business men and companies rather than end users.

All "rumours" ofcourse ;)

If Virgin is going to target businessmen and companies then I guess they will officially launch around the middle of the year (or Q3) when the mobile number portability service should be available from the 3 mobile operators.

If they launch sooner it will be more difficult to get high value customers like businessmen and companies to change their cellphone numbers just to use VM.

I'd like to see what they can offer to get high value customers to switch their contracts to VM!

Sub R1.00 calls at all hours .... :D

looks like we need a stronger anti monopoly board in SA as prices stay relitively alike thru out the networks and they hook u in on services, we need to encourage healthy competition i.e price wars so we the consumers can see real benifits and on the service front y do providers wnt me to pay for a service that doesnt benifit me like that caller tunes thing i pay so ppl calling me can listen to a tune instead of "ring ring" its a money making sham.

Good question, what can they offer besides better prices?

Even at 1c per MB I probably won't use it. It is terribly slow!

Flat rate Mobile Internet Access should be the norm for both pre-paid and post-paid users.

R100 unlimited usage for a month or R5 unlimited usage for a day.

Im not a big fan of cell c... actually not a fan at all, but What I know is Virgin is only Building their Data network and their GSM network is still gonna stay with vodacom!!!:)

Cell C is absolute crap...getting GPRS settings to a phone I bought from their was impossible...even after visiting their website I still couldn't get the settings sent to my phone...and then they''re charging you R2 to get the settings sent, how bloody retarded.

I'm never using it again.

I had the exact same experience with CellC about October 2004 - "smartdata" GPRS - it is just one of many things that put me off as a CellC customer.

The only way to get the settings is to call them. If you sms "smartdata" to 0841559911, one of the methods to get the settings according to Cell C, you get an error message saying your phone does not support GPRS. This happened with 2 different phones. Meanwhile you pay for the sms

What South Africa needs is a survey that ranks the mobile operators. The UK has the JD Power award for Mobile Operators.

The UK mobile operators make quite an effort to perform well in the survey. We don't have something similar - hence the bad service.

Look for Virgin Mobile end of Q2 this year. Don't expect big price breaks, but maybe some different ways of presenting / packaging cell services.

Value Add services like GPRS are not Cell C's strong point. I don't really know why they bother with them. Other than a kindof "Me too" marketing approach. They are not likely to win any major share of the business market from MTN / Vodacom.

For basic cellular telephony, especially prepaid, they are pretty decent and very competative on price.

I like WireFree's suggestion a lot - perhaps it's something that HelloPeter.com could do with data it already has and a survey that's run regularly...:)

IMO CellC hasn't figured out how to charge for GPRS yet - subscription charge etc my foot - kicking CellC...

Whilst CellC's pricing for ordinary cellular services might be close to Vodacom & MTN, I believe that CellC is the least competitive of the three - my personal experience with CellC tells me they have no clue about providing decent customer service & support, and their systems suck really badly, but that has been my experience, no doubt others will have been lucky & received decent service from CellC.

Bottom line is that CellC's GPRS needs a pricing overhaul before anyone will seriously consider it...

Agreed. It's like all the others. Basically priced out of the reach of anyone who actually uses the Internet. It's ok for the exec who checks his e-mail and does some light browsing, but for any serious use? Forget it.

Cell C are not here to give good service. They are here to squeeze as much money out of the South african comms market as possible while the f$%Ed up regulatory regime exists. They are owned by a bunch of foreigners. All the money they make is immediatly sent offshore. (It sure as hell isn't plowed back into their services).

Just another part of the government orchastrated rape of South Africa.
