Anybody else's VM connection gone dead? :(

It was running quite fine this afternoon... then midway downloading a 50MB file it just died on me... :( that was several hours ago now..

My sister also can't connect... so I suspect it's the usual downtime again... :(

My Virgin Mobile's down at the moment, using Vodacom now, anyone else's?

Mine was dead, but seems to be working noe, except that it is horrably slow and i still cant connect to MSN

Hi All

The drop in service quality is due to the failure of our primary Microwave link to our ISP. GPRS/EDGE services are available but only via our wired infrastructure. Engineers are working on the problem and we hope to have the service restored shortly.

Thanks for the explanation. Not sure if this is confidential but just wondering, how much has Virgin affected data traffic on the network?

I've been using my Virgin Mobile internet for about 2 hours now. Mine is working fine. Had 3 disconnects so far and speed is also fine. Could be better. But it's better than having no internet at all. I've been capped today and I'm not going to top up now because there is only 3 work days left.

While I appreciate the explanation, I'd just like to make a few comments:

Virgin data was also down completely on Sunday evening. When I queried this late in the evening they were fully aware.

Sadly, the failure today was a mystery to the Virgin 123 line  .

Please will someone from Cell-C give the Virgin people a call so they know what's cutting on their own service in future................cheers!

I was even put on hold for about 5 minutes while they "checked", but supposedly everything was fine. Clearly it wasn't but no use arguing.

Perhaps the more important question is why is Virgin/Cell C down so much?

I must say, there are times when I can't use Virgin Mobile then I try to use Vodacom and they are down or slow as well. MTN is the only one that's always up and running.

Vodacom 3G/HSDPA on the other hand is always working for me. So it seems that Vodacom GPRS/EDGE is the main problem. When Vodacom's GPRS/EDGE is down then Cell C and Virgin Mobile GPRS/EDGE is also giving problems.

So to my conclusion I think the problem lies with Vodacom. They are the backbone for Cell C and Virgin Mobile data users afterall.:o

Can't say I follow your logic, I have problems when I'm connected directly to the Cell C/Virgin network, ie. not roaming, which is presumably independent of Vodacom.

The logic is that Virgin Mobile is using Cell C's network and Cell C is using Vodacom's network. So if Vodacom's network is not up and running 100% then Cell C and Virgin Mobile will be slow or down as well.

Maybe but according to a post I saw somewhere on here, Cell C now carries 85% of their own traffic, guessing in major Metros its closer to 100% so the effect should be negligible.

Hi Piesang

To confirm the current status quo: Cell C and therefore Virgin do not rely on Vodacom. Cell C has is own network of more that 2500 base stations and only relies on Vodacom in rural areas where it is not practical for Cell C to roll out a network.

When roaming on Vodacom Cell C and Virgin Mobile subscribers only make use of Vodacom's radio and switch network (the same relationship as if you were traveling internationally and roaming on an international network). From the Vodacom switch all traffic is transfered to Cell C and Cell C manages the connection forward.

Currently less that 15% of Cell C and Virgin's traffic is handled by Vodacom. All other traffic is handled by Cell C's network exclusively.

Give me a shout if you have any questions

Hi Skeptic

I will contact the Cell C account manager for Virgin Mobile and ensure that the necessary messages get through to their support staff.

Thanks for you reply. So what this actually means is that if there is a problem with Virgin Mobile's GPRS/EDGE then it is a problem on Cell-C's side? Virgin Mobile is 100% relying on Cell-C then or am I wrong?

Hi Piesang

You would be correct. If a problem occurs on Virgin Mobile the same problem will be affecting Cell C customers. This said it is a little more complicated as Virgin Mobile only operates on a specific section of our infrastructure, so when a problem affects Virgin Mobile only a portion of Cell C customers will be affected.
