Hi there, I must say, virgin is now one of the useless companies I know. Why doesn't they do something to improve their internet? I mean I'm browsing now in early morning time, and about 1h30 I just couldn't get anything done. The icon says connected, but I couldn't open one page, not even google. Then the next moment its up and running again. The it suddenly disconnects. Then its okay again, then it stops responding again. I mean who will be happy with this? And why dont they do something about this? Its now a few months that its so bad, in the beginning I praised them, but now, now I'm ashamed to tell anyone I'm part of virgin. And gerald, dont organize a site visit, it is not the problem, it is virgins network. Because if it were a problem on my pc, then it will be the whole time. Ag please virgin, help us now

I had similar disconnections while using Virgin GPRS. The problem seems to arise when a phone switches from a Cell-C tower to a Vodacom tower. Try forcing your phone to only use Vodacom towers (you should be able to do this in your phone's network settings). Then see if your connection is improved. If you need help doing this, post your phone's model number and I'll see if I can help you.

This is a response from cellc guy, whom actually came to my joint, and from their i emailed him my modem log when i had probs - and my probs are that it connects, but you cannot surf.

I have done some investigation with regards to yesterday's problem and
found that the billing server for Pre Pay subscribers went down which
coincides with the times of your failure.

This is exactly what was happening in the past and data networks are
busy mapping out a solution in order for this not to reoccur.

Unfortunately, these major changes take time. So I will keep you posted
as things unfold.

Also as athlon64 suggested, the problem can and does arise around the switching of towers (cellc guy also suggested this).

If you guys' can post your downtimes here, so we can have a collection of everyones, just update as you get another downtime.

Oh, and cellc dude said that they are not going to be upgrading to 3g - so virgin subscribers can forget about that. (I know that we kinda knew that anyway, but it was just confirmed by cellc)

After all this time you still think that Virgin has its' own network. Virgin is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator and uses the CellC network. I quote from an article on Virgins entry into the market - At this stage, the venture will stay clear of any involvement with hard telecom infrastructure, allowing for lower risk/capital requirements while ensuring Virgin concentrates on what it does best: consumer marketing. Meanwhile, there is a risk that the outcome of VMSA’s entry will be inherently tied to Cell C’s own network quality, a risky proposition for the brand.

It remains to be seen whether Virgin has succeeded in what it does 'best' !!

Newsflash to Virgin: If keeping your billing server up and running is regarded as a 'Major Change' then you're in big 5h1t!

Thanks for all the replies, first, I know about the network selection, and I always choose the network manually. And I know they dont have their own network, but the problem is still on their side, because it doesn't matter what network I choose, vodacom or cellc, the quality stay in the gutters. I will definitely try other alternatives for my internet, I won't wait longer for them. I just wish I had the moola for broadband.

Perhaps Mtn should take the "Virgin" out for a date,
caresse her, make sweet digital 3g love with her.
Divorce that lazy spouse,
and finally marry into a family that doesnt have all that leeching no good
baggage.

I finally moved over to Vodacom a little more efficient with less cuts which at one stage i was pulling my hair out over the frustration, it's also a lot cheaper for me to use Vodacom because of my usage 1g a month. But i still use Virgin's voice as i bought my phone from them:)

I'm still using Virgin for data and don't have a problem, because everyone is pulling out ,so my internet access is faster than ever. I just don't want to spend so much on data a month and lose it if not all used up. What I pay for is mine and no ones got the right to take it away. They ripping u all off.

Why isn't Virgin doing anything? Hell, sometimes it's really frustrating. I just wish I had more moola for better internet. But if you're poor, then you're stuck with virgin.

@jacqvt, what is your monthly internet usage and what modem/phone are you using? I switched over to VC this month and got a 500 MB prepaid bundle for R189:) The speed on HSDPA is amazing:D
