Virtual Desktop/Switching Desktops in Vista

Hi guys,

Do any of you know of a way I could get 2 or more desktops in Vista, without forking out cash?

I googled, but I don't seem to find anything worthwile.

Hey teraside,

I've been having quite a bit of fun playing around with Vista Virtual Desktops. Its free, but still in Beta right now. I havent really had any problems, but you can check it out here for yourself:

It also works nicely with dual monitors which was a problem I had with one or 2 of the results google gave me when I was looking a while back.
 
Hey dude, I tried that yesterday, it kept giving me errors (using Vista Ultimate). Do you know of anything else? ;)
 
I heard rumours about nView (from nvidia) being ported to vista, but havent been able to find anything concrete :/

I did see another one, but they have been bought out recently and its now a licensed (read expensive) product.

Does MS Virtual PC not work on Vista?
What about the freeware version from VMWare?

Vista supports the new vhd format instead of swf, so if you get an app that uses that ... you'll be sorted.

Huh? :p

I actually want a second desktop, not a virtual pc ;) i.e. I click on an app and creates another desktop for me, in that way I could move/replace folders across desktops.

This was easy on windows Xp using powertoys, but I can't find one for Vista. A virtual desktop is not a virtual computer, but I know you must have misread dude ;) :p

There's a beautifull app that does that even better than vista. Called linux :D

Typical Vista bashing, Linux configgy editorish bolshy comment. Totally unnecessary.

Thanks a lot, I managed to get a download link for It after googling, since that link you gave is premium.

I have a problem however. I want the second desktop to be blank: i.e. no icons and I want to be able to move files across the different desktops, can I do it with this app?

...second desktop can be blank and you can move windows across, have you found out how to do these things yet?
 
Linux, has had virtual desktops from as long as I can remember, the last 8 years or more I suppose. I really can't do without virtual desktops, its the deal breaker.

Gnome, KDE and blackbox all have virtual desktops, don't know other window managers.

So give Ubuntu Linux a try.

Virtual Desktops are like 4 versions of your desktop that you can easily swap between (sort of like having 4 monitors plugged in)

Virtual PC is when you have a whole seperate operating system installed, that you can run things on without it affecting your normal operating system. Kind of like a sandbox if you have ever used an application that works on that basis
