You don't really need a Virtual machine. The latest version of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron has an installer called WUBI which allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu from within Windows. No need to mess around with partitions or Virtual Machines.

Yes, to be exact it gets installed into a folder on your normal drive (so it takes a slight performance hit, hardly noticeable), but when you boot you have to choose between Linux and Windows. But you can configure the installation from within Windows. In other words, it can run without actually booting into Windows, but it gets installed from within Windows.

Knoppix??:)

http://www.knoppix.net/

you just run it off a cd

Knoppix is a Live Linux CD based on Debian GNU/Linux

This website is about Knoppix, a Free and Open Source Live Linux CD. Knoppix is a GNU/Linux distribution that boots and runs completely from cd. It includes recent linux software and desktop environments, with programs such as OpenOffice.org, Abiword, The Gimp, Konqueror, Mozilla, Apache, PHP, MySQL and hundreds of other quality open source programs.

Shot, will sure give it a try tonight:)
Is Ubuntu better than Windows? On a serious note tho, no biased stuff

That's a hard question to answer. In some ways it is better. Very stable, nice desktop effects, all software gets updated when you do an update. Can update on local only (mostly). Some things you need to ask for help with, but the Ubuntu forums are very friendly. Once you start playing around with it, you will find you love it and spend more and more time there. Don't expect much on the windows gaming front although it has its own games. They have done great with streamlining the entire process so novices like us can dive right in. But every now and then you have to use the Terminal which can be a scary thing. But once you have done it, you find that it just works. I predict that withing a year or two you will not even need Windows at all. Heck, you could ditch Windows right now if you were determined.

Virtual box

Just make sure you install the vboxadditions to make it feel like you arent stuck in the virtual machine's window.

Also keep in mind that the virtual machine lacks 3D hardware support (so no cool desktop effects) and it slower than if you did a fresh install.

(I stick to VM when testing, even though WUBI sounds fun)
