I am trying to make a virtual machine in windows 7 so i can install server 2003, but i downloaded win xp mode and i cant get to work just a virtual machine.I thought this would help

Can someone help me in what i should download so i can run this in windows 7. I dont know how this all works, help a fellow out, shot.

you probably need vm ware or virtual pc, i think xp mode's for xp only.

XP mode is only XP o/s for Windows 7.

You'll need to download MS Virtual PC and XP Mode and install, then set up your VPC for Server 2003.

If you already downloaded/installed Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC Home (they come together) then it should be on your PC already:
Start -> All Programs -> Windows Virtual PC
(XP Mode and Virtual PC should be listed under each other)

Why not try VirtualBox or VMWare - also great pieces of kit.

yeah VMware is cool. Virtualbox is nice but you'll probably become an alcoholic after trying to get it to work - esp if you want to boot off an existing partition. I need a drink.

how to get XPM up and running:

firstly your motherboard and cpu must support virtualization technonolgy.

1) install vpc update (32x for win7 32x and 64x for win7 64x)
32-bit: Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu
64-bit: Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu

2) install xpm (32x for win7 32x and 64x for win7 64x)

btw. once xpm is setup you can install about any os into it even ubuntu. currently at work i have on my 'xpms' ubuntu, vista and xp.

but it would be better to go full vpc or vmware.

Stay away from Virtual PC as far as possible - it is crap. Rather use VirtualBox, it is not that difficult to set up. If you cant use VirtualBox then try VMWare Server. If you want the best and are willing to pay, then try VMWare workstation 7 - it is the king of desktop virtualisation products :)

Virtual PC is slow in my opinion

Using Vmware mostly to setup labs etc etc

Currently just setup 2008 enterprise to practise some labs for next week's exam.

And working perfect
