Hi guys,

Is anyone offering virtual server hosting (not virtual website hosting) in S.A.?

Thanks

Never seen any, sorry. I'm a bit confused by Gamco's offerings. I can get a better deal on a real server from Hetzner if I spec it the same.

a virtual server is the same as a shared server. name any ISP in this country and they'd be able to offer you those.

what exactly are you looking for? or did you perhaps mean cloud servers?

No? A shared server is the kind where you get your ftp username and password and they do all the server admin. Virtual server is a complete virtual machine that you get full admin access to, i.e. root password on a linux box.

"Cloud" is a buzz word, don't let it confuse things. I'm looking a virtual server. Like the ones from Bytemark or SliceHost but in S.A.

It's not exactly the same afaik. Shared hosting is webspace. Virtual server is your own 'desktop'/ operating system all to yourself where you can load and run applications from. Like accounting apps etc.

You can't load applications onto webspace.

I'm still looking around for a Windows Virtual Server. Anyone know of a host that offers it. (Ideally SA)

I know most people don't offer MS Virtual servers as the licensing costs are hectic..

I just remembered. RSAWeb offer a dedicated server with free Virtualisation with up to 4 flavours of Linux or Windows (Windows license will cost you a monthly rental tho extra). That means 4 x virtual servers for about R1200 pm. (DualCore CPU, 160Gb x 2 - raid 1, 2Gb ram)

You can run 4 x Ubunu or Suse etc with full root access.

You could rent the other three virtual servers out to other customers/ friends to alleviate the costs per month. Should work out to R300pm excl additional bandwidth over the free 5GB included.

GL.

Well, even their Linux options are priced, shall we say, very optimistically. Almost R500 for a 2GB/40GB with only 1GB traffic? Add 4GB traffic at R90 per GB, and you're pretty close to what Hetzner SA charges for a dedicated box with the same specs.

So does Vodacom and Neotel are building data centres as well.

The project I'm working on entails quite a bit of comparative work iro telco products...

Thanks Jason.

That is a really good offering, except for the 64MB memory size.
One Drupal website will consume 64MB in a blink.

But, going this route and being in control of your own domains and setup and being able to do things like encrypt/protect your source-code is the way to go.

And, 14c per MB beats IS's 19c a MB pricing.

I still cannot understand how Vodacom can charge 19c a MB for their bandwidth (2GB data bundle) but still, most of our hosting companies cannot break that bandwidth pricing barrier.
