Virtual servers in S.A.

Gamco's prices are a bit crazy, you might want to check out - http://vpsinabox.co.za

It's the same thing. If you spec it up to the point where it becomes useful, it costs the same as a dedicated server.

Full Root Access SHH
1 x IP Address
0.14 per MB 2 10 GB
0.12 per MB 2 100 GB

Also, I'm not sure I want to do business who use txt spk on their website and can't even spell ssh... Bandwidth pricing is ridiculous anyway.

Yeah, never saw their RAM allocation pretty pathetic. Maybe look here - SoftDux

Hmmmm, SoftDux is R160 per GB extra bandwidth, starting with 1GB included.
Hopefully you do not run just slightly over 1 GB. It would be a shame to fork out R160 for 2 bytes over 1GB.

But, R160 per GB is about 16c a MB.

Their memory allocation is much better though, starting @ 512MB.

R160 per GB  It looks like they all just nail you on something different - comes out to the same price. My S.A. clients are account for at least 1GB of traffic per day. Moving that to S.A. just doesn't make sense from a cost perspective.

This whole thing came about because one client wants sub-8ms latency...

Look here. Real server, 2GB RAM, 5GB traffic, R90 per GB over that. These VPS options doesn't make sense unless you you're using for development or something that requires little to no resources and generates little to no traffic.

Koffie, split the site into 2, with the low volume stuff sitting local for quick responses and the high volume stuff and storage space sitting overseas.

Hetzner still seems the best - 9c/MB or R90/gig, expect to pay around R100 per gig for local server bandwidth. Maybe look at getting a proper dedi at Hetzner?

I'm looking at telling the client to get lost. For two weeks now I've been listening to how he can do his own hosting better. If he paid me three times as much as he does, it still wouldn't make up for the time I spent dealing with his cr@p.
