Whats the best way to make 100% sure that a flash drive is virus free?

I am doing a course and part of the course is a flash drive with some course materials on it.
Now instead of just putting the course materials on the disk I plan to pack the disk with some open source apps. Portable Apps to be specific.

Now, although I am 100% sure that the apps from www.PortableApps.com are virus free, how do I make 100% sure I haven't inadvertently added one along the way? I am almost 100% sure my pc is virus free. Almost. I run avast and adaware.

Is there some online service or app I could use to scan this drive to make sure before I clone it?

you can test files with www.virustotal.com

best would be to do a format on the flash, and keep your AV updated.

don't plug it into many PC's you are not sure of.

but you'll be ok man.... Personally I don't even USE a/v software

Ensure that "Autorun.inf" is not allowable on the disk :)

+1 - turn off autorun or press Shift when the drive is inserted. I actually miss the older memory sticks that had a lock/unlock feature as standard - if the drive is read only, a virus cannot get on... :)
