Visiting an Oral Hygenist

Hey all, just wondering who has had a full teeth clean done with an Oral Hygenist? I went to the dentist thinking my teeth were buggered cos I haven't been to one in about 10yrs but was happy when she told me I had really strong teeth and have no cavities or other problems. She did however suggest I see the Oral Hygenist for a good clean (especially since I smoked 2 packs a day for years).

I made the appointment but since then have had everyone telling me how bad it is and how much it hurts and is worse than getting fillings, etc. Did you experience the same? To be honest I will do it regardless as I feel the benifits will outway the pain and discomfort (even if it does take almost an hour!) in the end... I hope?

Oh, my teeth are almost perfect, I do have 3 Wisdom teeth (one ws pulled many many moons ago) that need to be pulled.... luckily they are not impcted or anything funny so I asked if they could do it in the chair as apposed to going under, she is going to consult with another dentist who specialises in wisdom teeth and let me know if we can do this.
 
This is a new thing to me to. I have been going to the dentist twice a year my whole life but only recently does the dentist not want to clean himself but refers me to his oral hygienist. Problem is now instead of the normal R300 for the dental visit now you need to pay the oral hygienist as well at about R250 per session.

I have been once or twice now and it is just a bit uncomfortable.
 
Haven't been in 10 years either. Teeth still strong. I'd say got for a clean if you want to? I reckon regular brushing is good enough.
 
I usually make an appointment with an oral hygienist every 3 months, and I'm with the dentist twice a year.

And as for the wisdom teeth, I know they usually put you under, but I also know of a lot of dentists whio will actually just do it in the chair, especially if you are old enough and the teeth aren't particularly setted yet.
 
Doesn't hurt at all but I suppose it depends on the severity of your calculus build up. Oral Hygienist even told me that visiting once a year is enough and not necessarily twice a year as is commonly recommended.
 
I went to an oral hygenist and the stupid cow ended up scratching my teeth and gauging a hole in one of my caps which is becoming discoloured.

Just brush, floss, gargle.
 
Cheers for the replies. My appointment is for next week sometime but I am thinking that maybe I should have the wisdoms out first and then do the clean... will give my dentist a buzz tomorrow and see what she says.

It sucks, but it's bearable. It's when they scrape your teeth with a metal hook thing... Ergh, makes me shudder. :D

I have to go do this every five years or so. It's not painful at all.
 
I had 9 teeth pulled in 1 sitting & would rather sit thru that again than listen to the sound of the polishing/cleaning drill that oral hygenist uses...argh no man...It just goes thru me like nails on a blackboard except you gotta sit there & take it...no no no

Went a few days ago - it was unpleasant but hardly unbearable, and it was my first dentist visit in 15 years. Well worth it though.
 
Cool thanks for the replies, almost looking forward to it. I have a decent layer of plaque on the inside of my teeth so will be nice to have that gone. I regularly sit through hours of getting ink done so I can handle pain and discomfort if the outcome is worthwhile.
