Hi! We are visiting from NY and renting a house with no ADSL. I'm thinking about buying some gear this week before we leave. Is it worth buying a 4G USB stick? Will MTN or Vodacom be able to support one like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GVUQ48/ Is it easier to just buy a more expensive one from them when I get there? Also thinking about purchasing a router like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001963VPU/ for use in the 120 square meter house or even in the car. We also have an Apple airport express that I could get an adapter for I suppose.

We'll be living in Cape Town for just four months with two laptops and 2 Blackberrys. And we'll do a little traveling around the area. Any recommendations for cell/data and wifi set ups?

Thanks!

Those products should work, but chances are you are going to have to flash the USB modem to firmware from the networks over here.

You can buy similiar items in SA for the same price which will definitely work without having to fiddle around with the software.

Also, unless you want to pay the roaming rates for the data used, I suggest you get a prepaid SIM card (R1.00) from one of our networks. Just remember to take your passport with you and some form of proof of residence like a utility bill in order to get it activated, when you go to the shop.

I've found that on my travels, buying local seems to be easiest so recommend rather getting what you need here.

Anyways, welcome and hope you have a great stay.
