Hi guys

Well I've upgraded (C2D & mobo), installed Vista Ultimate and attempted an online activation. I was met with a security error so I used the telephone activation option and was told that when a significant hardware change is done then all subsequent activations has to be done via telephone

Is this true? I personally feel that this is a waste of time as a legal copy should be upheld irrespective of hardware changes. I believe that XP Pro didn't have such issues.

As far as I know you don't become required to activate via telephone for XP, infact some versions of XP don't require activation at all (no, nothing illegal).

I remember reading some bad things about Vista's activation that sounded similar to this, and a bunch or other things far worse.

Get a "fix" for it and you should have less problems. Don't you love DRM.

I thought DRM refers to music and movie encryption?

XP had the same BS with activation. After you activate, there is a file somewhere on the PC that you can just copy over again after a format so that you don't have to call again. Does not work on a different PC though or a significantly changed PC. It looks at Harddrives serial number, CPU ID and mobo info.

Easiest way is to go legal and connect via internet or just crack the OS.

AFAIK the calls are free.

You can still save the activation file on a usb stick or something, without it being illegal. Just saves a bit of grief.

Eventually everyone is gonna go Vista. M$ will make sure of it.

How do u do this Conspirator? Where would I find this file? Pray tell :)

Theres a Wpa.dbl file in C:\Windows\system32. Works in XP, not sure about Vista. One of the problems is that the Volume Serial Number of the harddisk needs to be the same as before the format. Same with hardware. If you go to command prompt and type vol then it displays the VSN.

If Vista generates a random ID on install, then it won't work without Ghost/Acronis True Image.

I've not looked at Vista in detail, so I've not tried it myself.

You know i am laughing so loud now and tears is streaming down my face,And you wanna know why,You ppl moarn about it like i did after i upgraded, but in the end you all gonna have to upgrade..lol.

True, we will have to switch to Vista at some point but we're happy with XP at the moment. ;)
