In my experience, Vista & "stopped running" often means that the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) kicked in. Updating as suggested sounds like a good plan. Also switch off your AV while playing and update drivers.

mine is also working fine, but i get this problem with TF2....always bloody crashing!! "the application has stopped working"...this message i get everytime when i exit the app....or "hl2.exe has stopped working"....i hate Vista!

its happened to me like three times while playing cod4 - and i have played a lot.
i personally think its nvidia not getting their act together with regard to drivers for vista.
also do you alt-tab alot? also turn your msn off can interfere sometimes.

driver issue... if ur playing on a vaio laptop by any chance switch the switch from "stamina" to "speed"

@Lonewolf, My TF2 works fine on vista but when I exit it says "hl2.exe has stopped working" so I think thats something it just does by itself, prob its only way it knows how to close a program
now that you mentioned that i used to get that with hl2 the game after quitting it would say that same message. I was like: 'okay'
it went away after some steam update.
