hi guys. it's that time ....

Time to cough up my hard earned cash for the new vista.
So i thought to throw the question in here ...

What Version is vista is best suited for a dedicated gaming machine ..
Thanx for the info and help in advance.

Vista is not ready for gamers yet - all NVidia graphic drivers for Vista are still Beta. :p

*When Microsoft releases SP1 for Vista, think I'll go for Home Premium or Ultimate. ;)

Are the latest 100.65 drivers still in beta? :/ Or do you just mean they are so bad that they should be in beta?

In any case I disagree, the drivers work fine as do all games I've played in Vista... I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or not with the smiley, but a lot of people think what you are saying anyway..

Well Home Premium is a good version, home basic has way too many features cut out. Business Edition is also good actually, its similar to Home Premium but without the Media Center, which just uses up resources even if you don't need it. Business also has the Previous Versions feature which can be useful.

Paying more for Ultimate is hardly worth it, I actually regret installing Ultimate from my cracked DVD, because Home Premium would have everything I need and just be a bit lighter on resources.

Wrong. 100.65 is whql signed drivers.

And thats not true. It's slighly slower than xp currently but nothing noticable for me.

As for the original question of the thread. If you can afford it get ultimate if not get home premium.

So, you're gonna sit and play Solitaire in Windows on a gaming rig, so that your can enjoy the GUI?

Does it have any hardware limitations?

I could be wrong but I don't think it has dx10 either. Read that somewhere but can't find the source now.

Any 32-bit Vista will be fine for games

No you are wrong stefan just because its WHQL doesn't mean its not beta. 100.65 are still beta :/

Ok Neo. I though only the sli part was still beta. I thought the rest was now final or atleast as final as one release of a driver version is.In the release notes it says the sli driver is beta but nothing about the single gpu driver being beta.

Hmmm, I don't know if it's such a good idea to go with Vista right now. Even if the NVIDIA drivers aren't Vista they still suck. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and the drivers are FAR away from being what they were in XP. So I'd say wait a few weeks. But hey, if you want Vista that badly, I don't blame you (bear in mind I am typing this on a machine running Vista :) )

You'll see the big fanfare nvidia will make about their full release driver within the coming weeks.

Its going to be a long journey until game performance and stability surpasses XP. Some times its games, sometimes drivers and other times both... We'll just have to be a little patient and maybe by June things will be much better ;)

Vista took five years to develop - the mind boggles why NVidia couldn't be ready with the release of Vista...

What i have found with Vista Ultimate - you start you game, and as you settle down to enjoy, the hard drive starts flickering and your game freezes for a few seconds/minutes. If you kill the game and go hunt for what's causing the lag... you don't find anything. Processor isnt doing much, ram is okay, but the hard drive is busy as hell. Still havent tracked down what it is.

The only hunch i have is it may be some sort of scheduled app - but havent been able to find the scheduler...

Yeah it wasn't a surprise to anyone that Vista was coming and in that regard I am also rather dissapointed not with nVidia only but everyone who has yet to provide Vista compatible drivers...
Logitech, Creative Labs, ESI, HP, and a whole list of others...

I do understand though that Vista is a new OS and unlike XP they haven't had years to refine, tweak and stabilize their drivers. It will happen soon enough though, at least if for any reason it'll be for Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3
